Jacket but no gloves?!?

Okay i've wanted to ask this question forever, i could care less if people want to ride naked or in full gear, but it absolutely boggles my mind to see people making the decision to wear a heavy leather jacket, on a 30 degree day....but not put on riding gloves.

Someone please explain....

The term is "couldn't care less".

The the answer is "stupid is as stupid does".

I always wonder the same thing about running shoes. In every crash video I've seen the running shoes go flying.

It's when they wear a jacket, gloves and shorts !?! that gets me.

I guess in a crash your legs never touch the ground?

So, you do care? Or did you mean to write that you couldn't care less?

Anyways, some reasons for wearing jacket and no gloves:

  • fashion statement
  • jacket has his narcotics stored in it
  • his hands are bionic prosthesis and don't need protection
  • guy has mad skills and has demonstrated that during repetitive wipeouts that he can keep his hands from contacting anything bad
  • gloves were stolen at the bar
  • person wants to wear some protection but not complete protection.

Is this not the same issue, however, anytime that a rider wears some protection but not complete protection? For example, why wear leather jacket but not pants? Why wear gloves and a skid lid? etc.

I do not wear gloves in very hot weather.
I will not ride without a jacket.
I will ride with running shoes.
Will not ride without at least jeans.

I love riding without gloves. You can really get a feel for what the bike is doing without gloves. Plus your grip strength needed is reduced.
I have had both my shoulders surgically repaired.
I mountain bike all the time. I have trained myself to roll with hands tucked in.
I have fallen many times on my mountain bike and have not gotten any scratches on my hands.
I have fallen once on my motorcycle without gloves at about 50kph. Not a mark on my hands.

I have seen many riders with a beenie helmet, wife beater shirt, shorts and sandles, but they wear gloves?
I don't get that.
I wouldn't want to just lay on the pavement without a jacket and jeans on when it is 30 degrees or more out.
If you fall without jeans and a jacket and get pinned under the bike, just the heat from the pavement would have me screaming in pain.

lol I wear full riding boots, armored jacket (but no spine protector), full face, and gloves, but sometimes shorts. Well, I don't have riding pants and it just sucks to change pants at the tennis court.

I think there's usually plenty enough time to stick your hands in your pockets in the event of an imminent crash (if you're not already riding with no hands). Anyways, ugly-scarred hands or digit loss is a great conversation starter.

With gloves I feel like I have a chance of minimizing damage but above a certain speed it probably doesn't matter. There have been some pretty gross videos posted of squids in tees sliding on asphalt using their butts for brakes.

Flame all you want, I have fallen at speed and not marked my hands.

I do NOT like green eggs and ham.

I'm not flaming you..

Although it does seem highly unlikely your hands would NOT touch down at crash of ~50km/h.

Were you already over the grass when you lost it?? If so, this is quite different, as you will slide and are less likely to roll or summersault. On asphalt, the leather will bite into the rough surface and is much more likely to cause you to roll or flip around. The centrifugal force while rolling at or above 50k is quite strong and not always possible to avoid your arms flailing out on you (wanted or not).

Seems you just got very lucky with you hands not touching down. If I were you, I wouldn't tempt fate that you hands will be fine (not touching ground) in the next instance..as its highly unlikely.

I agree that it is doable to fall at speed and not hurt your hands. But, it does limit your options for managing the fall if you don't have gloves, in my experience.

HAHA! YOU beat me to it. :lmao:

Good to see I wasn't the only one using the "voice" in my head as I read that post.

I recently saw a SS rider (Kawi, not GSXR surprisingly!) wearing.... wait for it....

Brand new Dainese jacket.

It is doable. I tuck my arms in on a fall.
When I fell I skidded on wet pavement over to the gravel shoulder and ended up still on the gravel.
I fall just like that on my mountain bike. I push my limits on my mountainbike and fall all the time. it just isn't fun if your not falling.

I have fallen at 90kph and the first thing I did was put my hands out. I had gloves and was lucky. It was instinctive, I had no time to think "oh I should land like this". I always ride with gloves, Jacket, jeans and shoes... No sandles!
