My ac in my acura works perfect in the am, then when the car sits in the sun throughout the day its shot. Took it to a mechanic twice and the guy can't find anything wrong. :(

Anyone know a mechanic that knows his AC?

Im in the west end 401/427

Thanks

you probably need to add more a/c gas to it. Maybe it has leaked out

If its overfilled it can freeze in the condenser, units under filled may not get the proper pressure to cool.
Your mechanics equipment may be faulty....
Is the compressor coming on when you put it in Ac?
Has he checked the evaporator temp sensor?

the sprinter I drive has a switch on the dash that has a lamp,, and says AC off.. so if the light is on.. the AC is off..... seems backwards to me,, I looked,, the light was on.. and it was still blowing hot air! ... finally it dawned on me that I need to have the light off .. to have the AC on...... don't know about acura,, could the dash switch be in the wrong selection ....

you sure the AC works fine in the morning ? the engine is cold, and its cold outside in the mornings,

Ac doesnt decide to work depending on wif its am or pm.... lol

does it work at midnight ?

If it's a 1.7EL, I'm going to guess the thermal protector switch on the compressor. Could also be a bad field coil. I've seen a few not work when they get hot.

park in the shade
problem solved
saved you money
you are welcome

I'd bet on a thermal switch, far and away the most common failure for that gen Civic/EL. Back when I worked at a Honda store we charged 1.5 hours and the part is about $50 if I remember right.

You can pull DTC's if it has any from the heater control panel.

There was a service bulletin back in 03-04 for the thermal switches, but that was for failures after cold temps.

Can't remember the specifics of the bulletin, but I know I've seen way too many of those switches fail on that generation. A few of those were after the car had been driven for a few hours or on a hot day.

It's possible to test the switch. Once you get access to it (it's on top of the compressor, may need to remove the power steering pump and maybe the alternator), check for continuity in the switch (there should be) or you can short the connector and the a/c should work assuming that's the problem. Once you rule that out, you can test the resistance on the compressor field coil (check service manual for what it should be). Of course do the above tests when you're sure the a/c isn't working
