How rusted is rusted?

Hey good people!

I've been treading on the idea to buy a used Yoshimura Duplex exhaust for my gixxer oiler.

Owner says it's rusted inside and outside. But I'm not certain if a simple clean up would do the trick. How would I know if the pipe is beyond repairable?

And any tips on getting the rust on the inside cleaned off? What are some of your best techniques overall?

Thanks for the advice!

Just dip it in some CLR! The ad says it works!

-> I honestly don't know..

Big rubbermaid jug + pine sol and water 50/50 mix for 24hr :)

Are you buying this exhaust or getting it for free?
Because nobody in the right mind would buy a rusty exhaust.

Pictures are required

Free would be fine, I wouldn't pay for a rusty exhaust..
Send it off to get blasted and ceramic coated....

It all depends. Anyone who has driven a car year round in Ontario for a few years, knows that rust can and will eventually go right through. Although there are various tricks and techniques for removing rust ... it can't put metal back. You could eat away the rust and end up with a hole.

I'm buying it for about $300. The seller argues, and from other opinions on other forums, the Yoshi Duplex is one of the most popular for my bike ('90 gixxer 750L) and that it still holds its value.
Full exhaust system. No pics yet. But he says the rust can be sanded off and suggested to throw some coins inside the pipe and shake it a bit. Wonder how effective that is. I guess best thing is to check it out myself.
Only problem is I don't head over to Kitchener too often. Maybe when it warms up I'll make it a day trip.

All oiler exhaust will have some rust. I media blasted mine last summer and its mint now

Perhaps a noob question on my part, but what's an oiler exhaust?

I suspect that it's a reference to the air-and-oil-cooled generations of GSXR bikes, which the original poster and zeniceguy both have.

Yup, oil boiler..... ride one hard and get off the highway into traffic. No fans, just oil and fins on the engine. Oil boils

Would imagine that you would want to pay attention to the quality of oil you put in the crankcase of an oiler since it has a lot more to do than in a water-cooled bike; plus no extended drain intervals.
