Hockey players acquitted

It looks like the gal at the center of this question proved not credible to the judge, and prosecutor failed to meet her burden of proof.

Pretty scathing verdict by the judge.

What’s next for these young men? They’ve already had their careers ruined, at the expense of taxpayers.

Ontario NDP with a giant own goal. Issued a press release praising the conviction, celebrating a win for women and the need for their new bill they are putting forward on consent. They issued before the verdicts were read. Losers.

Whats this entire thing about? A gang bang?

Why not name and shame this girl as well so that others know to avoid her?
I dont get why guys tend to get the short end of the stick when it comes to these things this day and age.

Good luck to these young lads...hopefully they are able to get around this financially and get on with life.

Not one of the five stopped to say..... Hey, maybe this is wrong?
The Justice system is f'd. Not much different than dui charged drivers getting multiple convictions.
What was wrong? She consented, they all had fun. It's not something I would want to be a part of but that type of thing happens way more than most realize. Groupies and bands make this look like church.

It really sounds like she had pressure after the fact to save her soul by trying to take down her "attackers". I'm not even sure if she believes some of the stuff she spouted as it drastically changed over time. It's easier to tell your mom you got attacked than to tell her you let some guys run a train on you because you thought it would be fun or a good story.

Hey, the Leafs could use a goalie. :) When I heard it was a woman judge I figured those guys were toast. I think she got it right,... drunk, horny young woman gets in over her head, has buyers remorse and blames the guys looking for a bag of cash. She should be named, not this time cupcake.

I'm conflicted about the naming. Part of me agrees with your logic but part of me thinks that even with the acquittal and anonymity, she is in great danger of unaliving herself. She has made this a part of her identity and her "truth" was soundly thumped by the judge. Either she admits to herself that she was delusional or she takes herself out. Sadly, there aren't a lot of other paths.

...or at least "This ain't worth the possible ramifications years from now when this chick decides yes really meant no".

One reason I haven't gone to a work event/party in 30 years... I don't want to witness the shenanigans or even be accused of or associated with shenanigans.

I don't think there's been one christmas party or retirement celebration where there wasn't some sort of fallout due to people's behavior/conduct and believe it or not... It's usually women getting into trouble.
'Last one was a drunk woman sexually assaulting guys (grabbing junk) and making a scene over someone calling her husband to come get her because she was in no shape to drive...
'Best thing is to not be there... LoL

If you believe you need to make a video asking for consent then maybe you shouldnt be doing it.

Maybe. Or alternatively, they have learned/been taught that there are gold diggers everywhere and anything short of a committed relationship is a potential huge cheque. Sadly, there is no real way to lock down consent as it can be retracted at any instant. Consent paperwork/video often does more harm than good.

I'm with your line of thought but I'm a dinosaur. Females never used to call a male, prudence etc. Once a year there would be a Sadie Hawkins day where the roles were reversed.

It's different now and the argument is that females are equally allowed to express their desires, life goals etc. They don't have to sit by, fluttering their eyebrows, hoping a guy will notice.

Drunk sex? Hormones and booze are a bad mix if people are supposed to recall exactly what was said or done.

This is more about morals and ethics than law.

Personally, I dislike any encounter with a drunk. Nothing is intelligent.

You're a bleeding heart, and a good person. I try to be the same buuuuuuut, hear me out...

I'm reserving my empathy, and my compassion, for the five guys who's lives and careers were ruined, and who will never make back the millions they could have made, build the legacy they could have, and who's reputations have been lost, because of something that they thought was happening behind closed doors among consenting adults.

You're worried what if she offs herself. I'm wondering if, in a world of finite resources, do we really need people who go out of their way to ruin the lives of a handful of others?

Hold your answer, because it's not just about what she did to those guys that's the problem.

This anonymous woman did a major disservice to women and victims across the country.
This decision will set back actual victims of assault, harassment, rape, etc. for another decade in Canada. It will make women who were actually victims of violence and assault ever more afraid to speak up. It will make people less likely to believe or take them seriously if they do. They will be more likely to be ridiculed and referred to along the lines of "Oh she's just like that woman from the hockey canada trial."

If I had just ruined a handful of promising lives AND I just made the country a much more difficult place for who knows how many women that are going through some really harsh, tragic, traumatic stuff, maybe I don't deserve to be around, and maybe you I don't deserve your sympathy.

I know too many victims, I know how impossible it feels for them to speak up. I feel no sympathy for anyone who makes it harder for them. If that makes me a bad person, I'm one bad dude I guess.

Tell us you've only had vanilla sex with one person at a time, without telling us you've only had vanilla sex with one person at a time lol.

I have DEFINITELY been party to some **** that it's a good idea to make people sign off on, but more importantly, even if I was only doing vanilla monogamous stuff, and I was worth HALF of what these guys were worth, I'd be making consent videos before I even get into a ******* taxi cab, let alone have someone behind closed doors with me.

I wear a helmet when I ride motorcycles for the same reason the missus and I have a cohabitation agreement between us: I like my assets and I think they're worth protecting.

Here is the important part. Consent can be withdrawn at anytime until the act in question is complete.

I’m not sure one hundred percent how I feel about this one . I’m pleased the correct verdict is as achieved. Would eighteen yr old me have been in a hotel getting a BJ coming off a world victory? Probably yes , would the me now have been there ? Heck no. Like in formula one , these young men needed managers and handlers to keep them out of mischief.

Morality vs legality. While some may have moral disdain for this kind of stuff, that’s not what is on trial.

The boys had the wherewithal to get consent memorialized - proved to be a smart move.

The puck bunny may have got in over her head, but her after shenanigans ruined the career of five young men. The police and prosecutor originally found there to be no radon to charge the boys, political pressure 2 years later started the shitshow trial.

I’d say she should be named, I see her greed for money and pursuit of defaming the men, and a malicious prosecutor who appears from the onset to have known there was near zero chance of conviction as a crime.

There are no winners from this outcome.

A few take aways.

I’m confident all parties regretted that night.

As a parent, if either the young lady or any of the boys were mine, my heart would have sunk to find out they were involved.

There was a lot of bad decisions being made that night.

The young lady received compensation from the league and anonymity. But, living with what happened that night and taking the stand for 9 days is a high price to pay.

The 5 players have also paid the price to their reputation, careers and future under the eyes of the public.

I’ve done some stupid things that I thought was fun and regretted it the next day. Especially at that age. Maybe not to the extent of this but, do understand how things can unfold and find yourself wishing you made different choices. I believe that could be the case for both sides of this.

The rest is just noise and rhetoric.

Everyone got into a snit over JT's brownface. Consider the location of his right pinky if the other person wasn't playing the same tune. The whole subject is subjective.

Could this case affect the players futures? Definitely, but how much depends on the percentage of the population is into group sex. I'm in the monogamous camp so not on their sides. Tiger Woods could think differently.

If their hockey skills are good enough, they could ride it out. Endorsements would be a tougher case.

In a way I feel sorry for the girl but when you get drunk there can be serious consequences.

If you can get into a bed, you can get behind the wheel, sign legal papers, buy things you can't afford, say things you can't unsay. Everything is fun until someone gets hurt.

A harsh lesson in life is that there are people that will take advantage of you when you're vulnerable and there will be long term repercussions.

If anonymity wasn't an option would more women be more cautious or would more be reluctant to pursue justice?

For the guys, if the world is OK with drunken gang bangs it shouldn't go against you. If the world is sensitive on the matter there will be a cost. You've shown your moral standards. The court has said it wasn't illegal. Go forward with your lives with the added knowledge that there are many out there that disagree with your behavior and the internet never forgets. Education can be very expensive.

Good point, and on the flip, no idea how the old the woman is, I'm assuming she's rather young... We've all done some stupid **** when we were young... It doesn't excuse bad behaviour, but maybe it just explains it a bit?
