Helmet Cams

So you are one of those people, it is a matter of courtesy, you are not randomly recording people on the street, you are recording people from a forum you frequent and should have the courtesy to ask. People like you are the reason I don't post public rides anymore.

I guess I am a person that likes to protect myself by recording everything.... Including idiots in group rides making everyone else look bad. If that person gets charged I got video proof I was not involved.

Don't ride like an idiot and you'll be fine.... Stop being so paranoid.

Yea because accidents only happen when people are riding like idiots right? You guys do as you wish I am not posting in here anymore.

No wonder there are hardly anyone posting rides on GTAM anymore and most good rides are private, you guys are bringing it on yourselves.

If you are so freaking concerned with your safety (like a camera is going to make you any safer) then sell your bike and buy a scooter.

I am just going to leave this here - take it as you wish

If you "feel" that a camera adds safety, then your fooling yourself. That is like saying red light cameras improve safety, or that no crime ever occurs where there are security cameras. It is an inanimate object it does NOTHING other than record. the camera isn't going to swerve your bike to miss a collision..lol

Yes it may assist you when it comes to proving what happened. I mounted my GoPro on my handlebars, for this reason. The lens is wide angle so you don't "need" it on your helmet to capture most things. If they hit you broad side or from the rear your camera isn't going to see it coming in all likelihood.

I ride with the camera for this reason I don't record my rides to throw on Youtube as there is already enough BORING crap there..lol. If I were to ride with others I advise I have the camera recording they can choose:

1.not to join the ride, (I don't do group rides only with friends);
2 ride behind me so they aren't in camera view; or,
3.ride responsibly, (this doesn't mean they have to be going 80 in a 80 zone). NO copper is going to know how fast/slow we were going as the camera can NOT see the speedo on my bike. On your helmet it may catch a glimpse of your speedo, which could be used in some of the scenarios spoke of before in this thread.

Plus, as of now, it is illegal so why draw unnecessary attention to yourself and your bike?

Who said they feel safer because of a camera?? Maybe I missed that.....?

I said it added insurance, like if someone pulled in front of me... why am I repeating myself. lol

*edit

I don't ride with my cam all the time, but if I'm taking a new or nice scenic route, for sure I'll throw it on...or if I'm riding downtown traffic, that's a good idea to wear it as well. But I don't use it everyday... I probably should for the simple fact of the insurance factor though!

SENA has a new Bluetooth backing for GoPro so you can have wireless headset and they make a rain case for the extended backing to fit.

Any review/news on this camera? Looks decent at a fraction of GoPro... and i have a GoPro.

Came across this through an eBay search.

Someone said techmoan is good for reviews for dash cams so I tried a search and actually found one.

http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2013/6/9/sj1000-at-lasta-good-cheap-action-camera.html

$80 + free shipping, handlebar, adhesive, helmet etc mounts. Lithium ion battery and I assume you can hardwire a cable. It has a loop feature and multiple colours.

Ordered a red one today.. Let you guys know how it is when I get it.

But the article and the user comments have links to user-made videos and I was quite impressed by its performance for $80.

I've also a go pro so I am infinitely curious on its capabilities.

It won't be in till the end of April so I'll be waiting a bit before I can indefinitely update you.

But judging from the review by techmoan and another by some Tom guy that was linked by the techmoan article, as well as various user submitted videos in the comments, I am quite impressed.

Hopefully it is the case.

Various edits will be to add videos and links.

Edit 1: Tom Hardwick is the guys name. PDF review http://www.theiac.org.uk/news/Tom-Hardwick-review.pdf

this is what I use http://www.tachyonxc.ca/.... about the size of a bic lighter, decent picture, great battery life. like most of them wind noise is a problem but I made a foam cover for it and put it behind my windshield and the sound is now great. it's not 1080p but 720 with the hd model. I use it on track days and have never had a problem with it and its VERY durable....ask me how I know... anyway it works for me. click on the link below to see it in action if you want. http://youtu.be/uK9khK6Zutk

Camera came in a lot earlier than expected. I ordered it March 25, and it came today. (Approximately 10 days total) Expected delivery date between April 11 and April 29.

Visit the imgur gallery to see the pictures. I ordered a red one to match my bike, and mostly because I didn't want a black one.

Opening the box reveals the SJ1000 device already encased in its go-pro-like exterior shell, and various attachments that screw directly to the case. The case itself has a screw in area.

There is a suction cup mount, handle bar mount, various other mounts and addon pieces that I assume would attach to the suction cup, much like the go pro attachments. There are also Velcro straps. Comes with the Li-Ion battery already inserted into the camera. The battery door has a lock door feature which is pretty nifty.

The camera is simple to use. On the top, it has a button for M and OK. 'M' I think is playback mode? Ok starts whatever mode you are in and ends it when you press it again.

On the right side, there is the power button, sd card slot and menu button. On the alternate side, arrow buttons, hdmi slot and usb slot. The case has a spring loaded button (like the go pro) and gives you access to 'M', 'OK' and 'Power'

The camera comes with a LCD screen built in to the camera, which is super nifty.

There is a time stamp that is on by default, that you can turn off in the menu. Other options changeable through this menu are 'Screen Auto-Off', Exposure, Cyclic Record, HDR, Resolution, Motion Detector Mode, and other various features like car mode etc.

Navigating through menus is pretty easy to get a handle on - Menu -> arrow buttons -> ok (simple!)

One thing to note is that it does NOT come with a USB cable. It requires a micro-usb type connector (Blackberry/modern day Androids)

Link to a quick video I made.

The camera is in its case, and I made the video very quickly. I panned the camera back and forth quickly to see if it'd be able to handle it. The casing it's in sucks. I was talking throughout the entire camera clip and it only picked up the sounds of me moving the camera and such. Compared to the GoPro in its case, this one is a lot more secure and doesn't move around as much

The camera says it will accept a micro sd card of up to 32 gb and people online had said to use a class 4 and it'll be good enough. I didn't have any class 4 sd cards so I used the one that I was using as expandable memory in my phone - A Patriot Class 10 Micro SD 32gb. There is a micro SD card slot on the side beside the usb symbol and it will take a bit of getting used to as it takes a bit of effort. I do not have nails so I had to let my brother do it. ANOTHER NOTE, when taking the SD Card out, if you are not careful, it will cannonball out!

People have said that a class 4 micro sd is good enough, but I looked further into it, and a class 4 causes the playback to be slow and choppy. It was highly recommended that you go at least class 8. For me though, a class 10 was still the best option as Best Buy is selling a Sandisk 32gb class 10 for 30 bucks.

My bad for the shoddy review, definitely not my forte, but if you have any questions, just ask!

Thanks for the review. I personally prefer the bullet shape (Contour, etc) but the SJ1000 camera looks pretty good if you're ok with that form factor. Any way to mount it on a helmet?

By the way NCIX has a 32 gb micro sd class 10 for $18.

Just took delivery of Contour's suction cup mount, can't wait to experiment with it. Footage should be less nauseating than with the illegal helmet-mount setup.

The 32 are usually always on sale so it's usually better to just go for that instead.

It comes with various adhesive mounts and use a 3M double sided tape. Is it as strong as the one supplied by go pro? I'm not sure. But the one given by go pro has red writing and the sj1000 comes with blue writing don't know if this means anything.

It also comes with a suction cup mount. I haven't tested it yet but I will say for certain that it won't live up to the go pro suction cup.

@JCHC91 if you want to vlog i dont see any ports for headphones, so how would that work

There are no headphone ports. The camera comes with an integrated mic but it's useless in the case. If you were to vlog I don't think I'd suggest this camera. I bought it for the sake of having a dash cam, and judging by the quality of the video and what not, I can use it as a back up action cam.

The company that designs this camera also offers a higher grade version. It's called a SJ4000. LITERALLY a GoPro replica!

Hey, where are you placing the suction cup mount? I'm contemplating doing that that as well.

I hate that suction-cup mount. :( Gotta screw the camera on and off and the mount is too conspicuous and bulky.

Has anyone actually gotten a ticket over a helmet cam? I want it back up there. :(
