Got rear-ended

Sucks dude. I'd get his insurance to pay for everything

Damn old coots driving. Last year I was in the fast lane of the 417 in Ottawa and suddenly everything slowed to 40kmh...it was a couple of old coots having a tootle along in the fast lane oblivious to the massive tailback behind them.

Hopefully he is paying for damages, as (already mentioned) your subframe is most likely bent (i.e. needs replacement). Obviously, the whole bike needs to be checked out - rim, wheel alignment, etc.

If you're sitting at the intersection, independent of your religion, you should be in gear, clutch in, and watch your mirrors. If the guy is not stopping, just roll through or roll to the side.

no lie, nothing scares me more in the mirror than somebody that looks 70+ years old

Agreed. I live in a bit of a retirement/cottage area and have seen some things. I realize no one wants to lose their independence/ watch a loved one lose it. There are many elderly out there who can drive better than many younger people but there are just as many if not more who should have their licenses pulled. I support the testing that the mto is doing but I don't think it is enough. I would like to see driving tests mandatory every 2/3 years after 65 and also after a major surgery/health event. Some may think I'm a little over board but after seeing old people (some of my relatives included) almost hit other cars or pedestrians it makes you want another layer of protection.

Call me paranoid but could his rear shock be damaged? Either the subframe or shock had to give. Bearings could be shot too.

Good tip. I just stay in blocking position and keep monitoring my mirrors, but it's probably not enough.

Thing is, it's not uncommon for drivers, who clearly don't know about blocking, to gesture for me to ride in the centre of the lane.

Agree. I have seen motorcycle riders and even cops in Europe squeeze in between the two car lanes while they are stop in traffic. As a precaution to prevent from getting rear ended by a blind cager. I guess also to filter through as well...

I got rear-ended during the rush-hour, stop and go traffic. There were maybe 10 cars in front of me doing a stop sequentially at that stop sign before it was my turn, and me and the guy behind were moving slowly for our turns. I guess I just didn't expect him to hit me after doing 10 stop-and-gos.

Also, both me and the guy were trying to make a right turn, so trying to hide in the lane was certainly not an option.

This is the only visible damage, on the plate:

I am getting the insurance involved, because I do want to cause some headache to the guy so he watches out in the future, for motorcyclists especially.

I was supposed to have my insurance guy come check out the bike, but he couldn't find the bike parked at YorkU. I told him not to worry about it since it's nothing I can see, but after reading the posts here, I think I will take it into the insurance shop.

I went for a ride to Keswick on Sunday, after the accident, and all was good. No unbalance feel, no issues with suspension, or anything else I can tell.

I injured my back by the way, but that was only after the accident when me and other people were trying to pull the bike off the car lol

So, I'm OK =)

Regarding repairs, I will follow "don't fix if it ain't broken" method, and go that way. I will get it checked thoroughly for sure though.

Also, collision centre pretty much laughed at me when I tried to report the thing. They told me not to worry no matter how much I tried to tell them about the possible invisible damage.

So did you end up reporting it? I'd take it to reputable Yamaha shop and ask for their estimate (like Oakville Yamaha). Insurance will fight tooth and nail - my buddy got screwed recently, he got baby LandRover, was clipped on the hwy by some ******. Car was less then 3 weeks old, rear quarter and some cosmetics - Budds was ready to replace everything with new parts and insurance insisted on fixing and painting (parts are expensive for his car). Sucks to see pretty girl like FZ6 gunned from behind like that.

Subframes are generally a bolt on item why would that cause a write off? They are not that expensive.
Half the time bikes get written off for some damaged plastics. Depends on the value of the bike and cost of the parts.

For those of you who keep saying get his insurance to pay. This is a no fault insurance system on Ontario. The other guys insurance does not pay to fix your bike your insurance company pays to fix it!

new oem subframe...prob $1000 with tax, plus a few hours to swap it out....another $500 at a shop.

$1400-$2000 for a subframe swap with all the fixings at a shop...if that's 40% -50% the bike's value it gets written off.

I have seen bikes with flaring damage written off

Bike's insurance pays it off. His insurance company collects from car's insurance

Technically you are correct. However, from my many claims I know in practice, for the end user, it works AS IF the other guy's insurance pays it. There should be nothing out of pocket for the OP and his rates won't be be affected.

Awe... my old bike! Glad your OK man.
It hurts to see it like that.
Damn oldies behind the wheel, reaction time is non existent and they can't see sh**.

Hope all is well with your insurance.

Tell me about it !!!!

About a month ago, found the bike laying on its side in the parking lot. Now this... I feel like I got it jinxed. I just don't wanna lose the bike before I can pick up the parts from you at least lol

WOW..
Brutal start to the season, I'm sure your luck will change!
You should grad the parts sooner than later... Sounds like you may need them!!!!

TXT me sometime and we can arrange to meet up.

Sorry to hear about your accident, and glad to hear that your on the mend....

From my motorcycle lesson days, I was taught:

1) Don't put your bike in neutral at a light, keep your bike in gear, watch your mirrors, and hand on the throttle - facing an open area, for a quick getaway
2) The best advise (IMHO) - I believe this is a variant to what someone posted? "BLOCK THE LANE" in other words when you come to a stop - stop on an angle - in the lane.
(That way - you present a bigger "picture" - so the dummy can see you) - I do this all the time...

I remember at the course they said to be ready to hop off bike if a car was coming towards you and it looked like it wouldn't stop (from the side) I always thought about that and how bad it would look if you did hop off, bike falls over and car stops with plenty of clearance. Be embarrassing, but better to stay alive I guess
