Goose Attack, Now we have Geese to Worry about

Come take our Total Control course - sharpridermotorcycletraining.com to learn that the bikes are plenty capable.

What about the folks out there that hate motorcycles... Who also think people should take personal responsibility for their actions.... If you want to ride.. Cool... But you should pay for your own medical bills.

+1 re the capabilities of the hd...

On a better bike, he could have braked (breaked) better, or swerved better, those bikes have a lean angle of something like 25 degrees, so if he had to swerve to avoid, the bike likely touched down.

Hey, I don't think we should even have helmet laws, but that people should take personal responsibility for their actions. So if people want to squid, cool, but they should have to pay for the skin grafts, reconstruction and disability costs, not everyone else.

In this case of this officer, likely a lifetime disability pension.

I saw five guys last night on the 403 wearing $800 helmets, $250 back armour, ...and t-shirts and shorts. Hard to take these fashionistas seriously.

I can pick up my Goldwing without assistance. A friend taught M/C training the cops and all of their riders, including the little girly ones, have to be able to pick up their bikes.

Canada geese can fly at speeds up to 55 MPH. Geese and deer pop out of nowhere in the blink of an eye. You can't react fast enough to avoid an impact.

You probably don't go much further than a Timmys so maybe one of our female riders can meet you there and show you how to handle a bike. Then you can go for a ride out in the country where there are wild animals like gophers, chipmunks and birds.

No joke. A buddy hit a grackle? Blackbird... fly Into his shoulder while he was doing 120. He was sore for a while and it made one hell of a mess. His first words were he was lucky he didn't go down. He said he tried everything not to hit it but couldn't avoid it.

Actually that is not as silly as sounds question, last week put on jeans that were too tight, dam almost dropped the bike when got on it, came so close to dropping.
I was on a slight angle with the concrete and almost dropped the bike,no used to the jeans being too tight and not flexible threw my balance off, but of course has not much to do with what wearing.

One of the best riders in the world, on one of the best bikes in the world. Still hit the bird.

Personally I think they should wear better(some) gear. They are mandated to wear a bulletproof vest in case they get shot, you'd think they could give them some leathers in case they get in a collision.

The full face I agree with ( and yes I wear a half helmet) if they want to wear one.

Imo if police are allowed to wear religious gear (ie police issue turbans) then they should be allowed to choose their extra gear. Which I don't believe they are (I could be wrong)

No matter the amount of gear or the type of bike could have prevented this freak accident.

Hell a dear jumped out in front of me last night. Thank god I was doing 50 in an 80. (Small back road without traffic)

With this logic we should be seeing people in full track suits dropping their bike while mounting it all the time :P

I'm sure full face helmets feel so awkward on your head and throw your balance off enough to drop your bike too ;)

I'm a gear supporter but not Nazi. Mesh jacket and Draggin Jeans, Modular helmet. Not only for their own protection but as an example to others, cops should use appropriate gear.

Fwiw, the golden helmets can and do wear protective gear including leather jacket, gauntlet gloves and knee high boots. They wear 3/4 helmets.

Of course there are plenty of demonstrations where they ride with short sleeves and shoes too but I don't know what the case was for this occurrence.

Interesting thread. Our gear consists of a solid leather jacket, no reflective piping, no vents, a 3/4 helmet with no shield, safety glasses, patent leather knee high boots with no ankle support, thin leather gauntlet gloves, and wool riding breeches. When on an escort, the guys will wear as much gear as they can but there is a balance between over-heating, and wearing protective gear.

The OPP is in the middle of a clothing review that has been going on for quite some time. They are in the final stages of approving a jacket, which will be ballistic nylon with a removable liner, venting, reflective/high vis components. They are also looking at the Shoei J-Cruise helmet, a 3/4 design with a clear shield.

I am an advocate for getting better gear in general. The uniform that we have now works on parade but not on patrol. I don't think it would have helped PC Tucker much at all, however.

As for the bikes, while they are heavy, they are a capable machine that can easily be righted single-handed. There are two techniques we use for this, and they are probably all over Youtube. The York lift is the easiest for most people. We have to go through a tender process in the next year, because the OPP has been sole-sourcing from Harley for too long. I will be helping to assess the bikes when they come in next year.

Do you know of any city's using the lighter weight Sportster? seems would be very nimble in daily routine traffic...

I'm not familiar with any using the sportster, I would suspect that picture is American, maybe New York? Or another State with a blue helmet?

I'm not sure if it is the OPP or the Metro Toronto Police that have BMW R1200RT-Ps. Is that true? Many US and international police use the BMW authority vehicles. They have proven to be rugged and nimble but are known to have reliability problems.

Back in April/2010 and during G20, TPS was using a number of R1200 RTP's. It was a one-year evaluation of BMW motorcycles and an alternative police riding gear/uniforms.

Out here in the country, I have close calls with critters all the time. I believe that it all depends on where and how you hit them or they hit you and the speeds involved, that will say whether you lose control or not. I hit a bird in flight once. I was doing about 110kmph and it flew across the road, right out of the grass on the side of the road. Fortunately, for me, it was flying very low and hit my bike straight on, just on the low side of my headlight and fairing. I didn't lose control at all. But I did get ***** on and yolked. It caused about $900 damage to the fairing, that I eventually had to replace a few weeks later.

Friend just had a bird fly into his shoulder on Townline. He kept it upright but what a mess. I've been dodging them all over the back roads lately. I got one last year when it flew into my wheel. Got lucky and didn't go down. Wasn't fun though

A lot of misconceptions in this thread. This was a freak accident, it could happen to anyone. It's impossible to dodge a bird, goose, etc. you can try your best but if it's your day to hit something you will. Proper gear could have made it a tad better but it's a goose for goodness sake and not a sparrow LOL. Next, someone on here will say that if you hit a moose with proper gear you'll be good to go. For those who think they are superhuman riders C'mon.

I hit a ground hog on friday morning on a backroad outside of kingston. I almost dumped my vfr. However I was only doing about 70/km at the time. Point of impact was a bit slower. I couldn't image taking it at out at 100km/hr+. I think I would've seriously injured or dead in the ditch. Friigin deer. Don't know there on the side in the tree until 1 second before they jump out in front of you doing 80km/hr

I knew of a guy who smokedd a deer in swontario. Killed him.
