Are you able to install Garmin Mapsource or Basecamp onto a Windows 8 tablet? This way I could bring a tablet instead of my older, slow netbook with tiny resolution on roadtrips. I would also need USB connectivity to my Garmin GPS.
Thanks, that's helpful! On the tablet side it looks like I'm limited to Win7 (not a great interface for a tablet and probably poor battery life) or a non ARM Win8 (probably poor battery life).
Interesting, never thought of that but I'm more interested in a tablet vs laptop.Perhaps look into a used 11" Macbook Air? Similar size to a tablet, but more powerful. A Surface running Windows RT (hasn't been reviewed too well btw) with the touch keyboard retails for around $600 plus tax. Here's a base 11" Air, still under warranty, for $650 http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-computers-MacBook-Air-11-W0QQAdIdZ434200993. Didn't look too hard, that's just the first one that popped up
I wouldn't use the iphone as a GPS as it's too delicate and not waterproof. Plus I would use this setup mainly on my roadtrips which take me south of the border where I don't have a data plan.i think there's a garmin app for iOS, iOS devices have gps built in.
