Furnace Rebates + New Furace - tips

Im going to need a new furnace in the next few yrs, my 15 yrs old furnace seems to be working just fine , but I know it will die on my sooner than later.

Anyone have any tips for the max rebate ? any contractors you trust ? Can they use the same vent ?

My ac is from 1992, its a 5 ton unit for a 1600 sq.ft (living space) town house.

How do I make sure I get a quality one ? and good install ? There is a rebate program?

Got a Costco card? We got a competitive quote from them but ended up going with someone local because we needed the install into a crawlspace.

my neighbor has one, can she claim its for her ?

I've bought washer / dryer and big stuff with her along, she just pays for it.

May not be the cheapest, but here's who we picked to install a tankless water heater and replace our furnace at the same time: http://www.huskyair.com/ Installers were professional HVAC guys with CSSA/gas license. Exhaust/temp-rated PVC vents are required now, if you have the black ABS pipes these will have to be replaced. You also may need an intake vent also.

Probably not because the address won't match the membership. The contractors are not likely going to look the other way as Costco watches them like a hawk, and they don't want to lose that contract.
My bil is an hvac guy. Has his own business. Let me know if you want his info.

What about Government rebates? Used to have something ages ago when an independent company checks your house energy rating, then you get work done like windows, furnace, etc. and they re-check. Submit that to the govt and get your rebate of a few grand.

See what Costco rates are (ask around) then get a $50 membership if it works for you. You might still end up ahead. Usually a Costco HVAC install comes with a cash card rebate and I'm not certain, but you might be able to convert the cash card into cash...so really a rebate. Also, while you're at it check your AC, if you need an upgrade this is deal season (end of summer/start of fall) for combined furnace/HVAC which is what we did.

We found that Costco tends to use the better installers and higher end equipment, sometimes at a small premium but still good value. Shame the buggers couldn't get their furnace model into our crawlspace opening.

Couple of things, are you sure your AC is 5 tons? For a 1600 sq.ft home, a 2 ton (24 000btuh) would be adequate.

As for the furnace, look for brands like Lennox, Carrier, York, Keeprite and Daikin. Those are the top in my opinion. However, the quality of the installation is key. Your venting will most likely need to be changed to PVC 636 if not already existing. If you have pipes running through a finished ceiling and don't want holes made in the drywall, the installer can pressure test the exhaust pipe and apply for a variance through TSSA, and the pipe will need to be retested every 5 years.

Not sure of what rebates are out at the moment, but any salesman from any contractor should be able to tell you.

@frekeyguy might be worth it to get the $100 executive membership in that case. Comes with a 2% rebate. Apply for a Costco M/C, another 2%. Might be worth it for the cash you're spending. But be careful; you may also end up with a new tv, gazebo and a years wor5h of toilet paper. (Talking from experience.)

Since it looks like your in Brampton, check out the embridge website for rebates on upgrading your gas equipment. A quick look on Union Gas website and a little searching in the residential section has lots of helpful information on rebate programs and all that jazz. One website that was on there had some information that helps understand different rebate programs ( although closed now for 2015 ). http://knowyourenergyscore.ca/home-energy-conservation/

heres the Uniongas website and how they help with rebate info

Just replaced mine along with the Air Conditioner. It was 20 years old so I thought it was time.

They had to run new plastic exhaust/inlet pipes as its high efficiency. They just go straight out through the wall.

There was a $250 rebate on it.

I had a friend who installs and services furnaces for Enbridge do it.

FWIW, he said his preference was for Lennox or Carrier. In terms of efficiency they are neck and neck, but recommended the Carrier as he gets less service calls on those - but would install Lennox if our heart was set on it. We ended up going with Carrier.

if your going to stay in your place for the long term buy a Trane or Carrier product. Trane makes the better product but many more Techs are trained on Carrier should you ever need a repair down the road.

Instal will be hit or miss since most HVAC shops that are competitively priced will contract out the instal. I've always shopped for the cheapest price and I've never had an issue with the 3rd party installers.

Edit. Last shop I used was Four Seasons Air Control in Mississauga...super competitive on price and clean instal. (About 5-6 years ago) (A Friend used them 2 years ago with same experience).

Good luck.

If you want to keep some $ within the motorcycling community, Kris Garvie (CSBK rider) is a HVAC installer/technician, is local (Snelgrove), and is good. Find him in my facebook contacts and send him a message there.

I can vouch for Kris, he did my aircon and I will use him for the furnace as well in the future. No BS, very clean work and super guy to talk bikes is a bonus ... :-)

Enbridge doesn't install or service furnaces.

Trane is the better appliance. Any good tech should be able to service any furnace, regardless of manufacturer.

Thought I saw a flyer the other day that stated it was $1500 Costco cash card. That sounds high but have a look.

Interesting, as i called Enbridge about having a furnace upgrade done. They sent a guy out who talked numbers.

Now i understand Enbridge may subcontract the work out to a diff company but it was Enbridge that was gonna pocket the $$.

In the end i went with the same furnace Enbridge was pushing, but bought it in US for half the price. 95% dual stage, inverter driven fan Goodman. While i now know Goodman is not the best name in business, it lasted 4 years we were in that house with zero issues and i suspect will run for a long time.

Enbridge doesn't install or service furnaces.
