Fire department Bill

Just a question about those bills from the fire department after an accident for the insurance guys on here .I have received a letter from the ministry about the bill for a pumper truck attending the scene, i have refused to pay it, as well as my insurance company , so it's jus in limbo now. My question is what happens or what could happen if that bill remains unpaid ? is there any legal ramifications ..thx

The mto will pursue recovery from your insurance company if you were at fault for the accident. Your insurer can rightfully challenge the mto if they don't believe the bill should be paid. If the dispute can't be resolved the mto will litigate and your insurance company will defend you.

Does anyone else find it offensive that if I need the fire dept at the scene of an accident I.e. To rescue me I have to pay them for this service? Aren't fire departments funded through taxes etc for this?
What next if I have a heart attack while golfing will the fire dept charge me for this service too?

Collecting taxes = "bad" so the government makes it up through "usage fees". It is offensive, but with lower incomes for regular citizens and lower corporate taxes in addition to our economy being exported to Asia, the money has to come from somewhere.

You're assessment is absolutley right. These fees are a user fee. But, whether it comes from your tax dollars, or your insurance premium dollars, citizens are still paying the costs.

Just an FYI. Same thing goes for your Ambulance bill. If you're ever in an accident and you get dinged with the $45.00 ambulance fee or the $115.00 if you're in Toronto. Resulting from an accident. You can submit that bill to your insurer and it will be covered.

Even if your low income you should still have insurance while driving no?

Just an FYI. Same thing goes for your Ambulance bill. If you're ever in an accident and you get dinged with the $45.00 ambulance fee or the $115.00 if you're in Toronto. Resulting from an accident. You can submit that bill to your insurer and it will be covered.

I had an accident at Victoria Park and Eglinton ave Sept '09 and got charged the $45.

Probably a good reason NOT to charge.....

If you have an accident outside of your city of residence, you get the bill since your taxes don't go towards the local FD.

I'm quite sure this only applies to vehicular accidents since they expect drivers to have insurance and that's who usually ends up paying the bill. I haven't heard of anyone getting a bill because their house caught fire.

That's the thing, and where does it end ?, who's regulating theses fee's ? I think we are on a slippery slop when emergency services allowed to start charging for a service they are being paid GOOD MONEY! to do, the last thing an accident victim should be worrying about is a bill in that situation..

Doesn't only apply to auto accidents ,If your house catches fire and fd attends, you will receive a whooping bill...

We get into accidents and try and "fix" them ourselves so the insurance we pay for will not go up.

I shudder to think of someone trying to put out a fire because of these fees and making it worse.

Also what happens to an over zelous dispacher who sends out twice the trucks needed. I would hate to be pulled over on the side of the road on my bike and have someone think it is an accident and call it in. If they show up and you don't need assistance (false call) would you still have to pay?

You think the firefighters are pocketing this money, what does being paid well have to do with charging a fee? These fees are used to pay for the supplies that are used at a incident. Its not like it goes into a pot and the ff's get a bonus at the end of the year.
