Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Have a small gravel path behind my garage that is always overgrown with weeds.
What's your go to solution for removal? I'll admit this path is always at the bottom of my to do list. My budget is zero so no major renovations, just want a reliable way to keep them somewhat under control. Thanks!
Salt

We use pool salt on our interlock, works like a charm - just keep 1’ back from the stuff you want to keep alive.
Mixed with water or just dump salt?

Vinegar with some salt and dish soap nukes plant life and keeps it away for a while. If you want longer periods between treatments, use bucket or blade to scrape away a bunch of gravel, put down barrier fabric and spread gravel over top.
Tried this numerous times, limited results. May have to just manually remove. 💩

A soon as the new goes in I get a work/potting area behind the shed. It tends to be a bit wet there so I plan to cover it with coarse mulch. I figure mulch wipes off the boots easier than mud and I can get mulch free.

The area is also very shaded so nothing grows well.

I might be related to Rube Goldberg

I didn't like the way my front downspout poured onto the interlock walkway near the house and a leader across the path would just be a trip hazard. Instead I put in a new downspout at the gate, six feet of trough across the gate, a drop to a catch and twenty feet of horizontal leader to the front lawn through a cut out in the lower gate.

The front downspout is now capped.

We sweep it into the cracks between stones. On the dark side of the garage I have a gravel path I just broadcast it using a fertilizer spreader. You need quite a bit.

Another option is to use a black tarp. Place it over the weedy area when the ground is a little damp and the sun is shining. It will cook everything underneath.

Fine a friend working at a golf course . They get all the good chemicals.

Farmers too. I get concentrated Roundup from BIL at $20/l - when diluted it makes 30l ($1000 worth) of the retail blend.

Crabgrass is my issue. Can't get anything to kill the stuff.

Same here. I have real Roundup that I've used to get rid of ivy but crabgrass is taking over much of my lawn. Green is green imo (as long as it doesn't make me itchy) but the crabgrass dies halfway through the summer so I'm left with a half brown lawn.

Lawns, the scourge of the working man.

Originally they were meant as a sign of wealth. You had so much land that you could waste it by growing the most useless plant on the planet. Lawns use too much water, herbicides, insecticides and time. You didn't have to grow cabbages and turnips in the front yard.

I spent several hours digging out every dandelion last week, smiling in satisfaction. The next morning I was greeted by 24 smiling yellow faces :(

I fertilized my lawn a couple of weeks ago using a new spreader and chemical. The chemical worked fine but I messed with the application being uneven. I now have a striped lawn.

How long do I have to wait to do a cross pattern to even things out?

'Buy a corner lot' they said. 'It'll be great for the kids' they said. 'Having a big driveway is awesome' they said. 'You'll love the backyard and front yard' they said...

In some cases THEY were right. But THEY don't have to mow it, clean it, work on it, fix it, level it, or shovel the driveway....

F them.

Never again. Next house is going to have a patch of grass.

Lawns and gardens are analogous to cars and bikes. Good maintenance and you’re not constantly repairing things, just enjoying the greenery.

I have about a 1/4 acre of carefully maintained lawns and gardens, in my city place. Takes about 3 hrs a week to maintain including cutting.

Always green, weed free and the bushes and gardens plantings stay nice.

It starts with food soil which I don’t have. Pure sand here. I’ve added triple mix to the top, hydroseeded, fertilized, overseeded (6 times), watered, etc.
Lawn still sucks. I was told when I did the final grading I’d likely need to buy $5k in topsoil to get a good lawn but I continue to try to improve it (within reason).
The annoying part is seeing run-down houses or ditches with beautiful grass growing wonderfully.

Oversees with fine fescue, not Kentucky bluegrass grow. Apply a spread of annual ryegrass every spring and I’ll bet you’ll do ok.

Sandy soil is ok for grass, but you have to match fertilizing to the soil conditions and water more. Improving soil is best done by adding peat or compost, not topsoil.

I seed my lawn with clover and a bit of grass and it's doing really good. I'm letting it grow so it doesn't mind the dry summer. Plus, clover is a vegetable so even during water restrictions I am allowed to water my "veggie" garden.
