engine oil conditioner?! additives?!

hello peeps,

so a couple of peeps recommended i add engine oil conditioner to my bike. bike currently uses conventional to semi synthetic at the most. it was mentioned that the conditioner is mostly for cars so only a small amount of the recommended amount should be used for a bike. a few brands names were mentioned like seafoam, wynn, and others i cant remember.

so my question, has anyone used or has any experience with engine oil conditioner/additives? which ones? and bought from which shop?

i've heard of fuel additives, and something that's added to the oil prior to oil change, but not too familiar with conditioners. thanks in advance.

I have always been advised to stay away from oil additives (in MC's). Bikes internal seals are a little more sensitive to stuff. Not to mention if you are running wet clutch then who knows what affect that stuff will have. Unless its specficly designed for bikes stay away from additives.
 
Why do you want to put any additives?
Is the bike running rough/sluggish?
 
Just change your oil frequently, I'd stay away from any additives as well. I used seafoam in my oil to clean the motor out and it worked great but it was in there for 5 min then flushed with 2 oil changes after not left in.

If you use a good quality oil at regularly change intervals, for your bike then there is no need for extra additives. Don't waste your money.

I wouldnt add anything to the oil of a bike, id be too afraid of it messing up the clutch.

Sure add Seafoam to the gas and such, but thats it.
 
LOL. If you have some money to spend, just buy a better oil filter and use synthetic oil.

Best oil filters: Amsoil "Long" Ea15K13 (R1, 2005 or under R6, VFR 800, etc.) or "Short" EaOM103 (2006+ R6), one of those will fit 99% of all sportbikes :)

When it's time to change your oil, it comes out look cleaner than it did going in!! Nuts.

For full synthetic oil you can use Amsoil MCF and there are a few other true synthetics as well.

Jamie, I thought you guys discussed this oil filter topic for quite a while and realized that you couldn't readily get these filters north of the border?

All amsoil dealers usually stock these filters, and the main Amsoil depot in Mississauga had more than 10k of each filter last time I placed my order :)

I put the Ea15K13 on my 07 R1 and the Amsoil MCF synthetic oil. Looks clear as honey in the oil window even after two track days and a trip to algonquin park, and the tranny shifts smooth as butter now, especially from N into 1st, no clunk, just "click" and no surge from the bike :)

Nice!! The EaOM is a "real" motorcycle filter, but I always like to use the absolute biggest oil filter I can fit (more filtering media, more oil capacity, etc) so I used the car oil filter Ea15K13. I've always used car oil filters on my bikes (Purolator PureONE PL14610, etc.), never an issue!

Glad you're liking the MCF. I can't believe how smooth it makes the tranny feel too!! :D

Is there a particular reason why you think you need an oil additive?
 
There is an entire aisle full of snake oil at Canadian Tire. Most of it does nothing, some of it can really **** up your motor. Just walk on by.
 
Modern engine oils are highly engineered ON THEIR OWN. Adding your own snake oil, generally, is just going to throw the engineering in that oil out the window by messing with the chemical balance that has been designed into the oil.

Think about it. If there were some property of motor oil that could be improved by adding some other chemical concoction to it, why wouldn't the manufacturer of that motor oil do it in the first place??

Pick a good motor oil that's suitable for the application, stick with it, and don't use any additives.

Jamie....it could be argued that, despite the larger size of the Ea15K13 (and there's no disputing the merits of higher oil capacity), it might not have much more filter material than the smaller EaOM filters. The Ea15K filters are "rated" for 15K mile change intervals, whereas the EaO's are rated for 25K mile changes (although these ratings are somewhat meaningless when it comes to bikes).

Ahh, could be :) When it's time to change them I'll cut open my Ea15k and my GF's EaOM and have a look see :)

thanks for the reply peeps.

well 2 things:
1) mechanics (2 of them), rode the bike and suggested to add 'oil conditioner' to help oil circulate better. (the shop and mechanics will remain nameless).
2) thought of adding seafoam in the engine for cleaning then do an oil change.

i believe the current oil used is motul semi synthetic (i cant remember the designation), and it was done by Pro6. new filter and all. the filter was green labelled with 'flow' in the label (the other option was k&n). cant remember the actual name.

there was another discussion with mechanics (from diff shop) and i was advised not to use synthetic oil for my bike. bike is a small cruiser. so at most, semi synthetic. im trying to remember the reasoning behind it, but it was somewhere along the lines that my bike's engine doesnt work like sports bike engines.
 
I'm no expert, but all that sounds like bunk.

You can use seafoam in your crankcase before an oil change but there's no real need for it.

Use an oil with the recommended viscosity for your motorcycle, change at the recommended intervals, and don't worry about additives or whatever a conditioner is.
