Ear Plugs

Can anyone recommend a place that does custom earplugs that work with earphones? Also what's average price everyone is paying?

There's a place in London "London Custom Ear Plugs" that I had some custom earplugs made. Paid $80 I think. They had custom plugs with earphones advertised which arn't cheap. I think it was $300 for Bose ear plugs and slightly less if you use your own ear plugs. Personally, if I want to listen to music, I use the noise cancelling buds and pull over every couple hours to fit them back in my ears as the vibration slowly jarrs them loose. Not worth $300 just so I don't have to re-adjust with customs IMO.

As far as noise cancellation headphones go look at Phiaton PS 20NC or AKG K 390 NC Black Mamba. These are rated at 95% NC.

For regular earplugs I get Surefire EP3 from work. I wouldn't say they are better than regular foamies but you have the option of hearing low sounds or plugging them completely.

Where do you buy these? Do you order from the site? Thanks.
I order from the site. They're local so you'll get them next day.

I find I can wear a set of foam ear plugs for about a month before they start getting not reforming once I squish them down and put them in - I ride everyday, and put them in 2 times a day.

In colder weather the foam ones are harder to squish down and have them rebound - so breath on them for a bit to warm them up - then squish and insert.

I've got tons of the AC overnight kits that comes with ear plugs, toothpaste, etc... so been using those for years...

now here's my question...i agree that ear plugs are a must, especially after reading some of the information i've found on various websites about the damage that wind noise can cause...how do they feel?...specifically, do they block out so much noise that you can't hear what's going on around you?...i'm scared that it will be like i've lost one of my senses if i wear them while riding...

ear plugs block out certain frequencies, high pitched stuff, the "white noise" you would hear between radio stations. they're a must have for rides longer than 10 minutes

Last year I started off with no ear plugs then I just wore the foam ear plugs.. Makes a huge difference, especially on the highway. At a bike show this year I got custom ones made and I am loving them. Fit great, no messing around with rollong them up or them getting loose while putting on my helmet. I can hear everything just fine, just much quiter. The only thing I find is that sometimes if I'm driving in the city and hear sirens I can't always tell which direction they are coming from.

Iirc in a full face helmet, sound levels are ~90 dbA. This is above the level that would require hearing protection in a workplace. If you wear earplugs with an nrr of 30, that's gets you closer to 60 dbA. This is similar to a very busy office (cubicles). Ear plugs dont prevent you from hearing anything, they just make everything quieter (but still well above the lower limit of human hearing)

I got noisebreaker filtered custom earplugs from a hearing centre for $110. They work OK around town but on the highway I need more noise filtered out. I think they said they could just use the moulds and make me a new pair with no filters for about 40ish. Until I get those I use the squishy foam ones and they work fine. Only problem is I'm hoping it's not too late, I have semi-permanent tinnitus now, not to the point that it's really annoying, but it's enough to make me want to book a hearing test. Short story..wear ear plugs and save your hearing.

My favourite by far of all the various disposables that I've used are these http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/peneskscean3.html

My sister used to be in ergonomics and used these in a lot of factories, they're reusable and washable. Best part is how easy they go in your ear, just shove them in... No rolling, trying to thread down the canal like true foamies.

love the skull screws. Not as much hearing protection as others I've used, but still quite effective (and I wear a shorty). I keep using them because I got sick of always having to go through numerous tries with the others you have to roll and get just right to fit deep in the ear canal. A pain especially when riding with others and they're waiting for me to gear up. Skull screws I just shove in there. Good to go.

well, i just went for a 100km ride reaching speeds of up to 110 kph and wore my new foam ear plugs...and WOW what a difference...could still hear everything around me and didn't feel off balance (i thought they might make me feel weird) but the biggest thing is the wind noise didn't bother me and my ears aren't ringing/sore after the ride...i just bought cheapy foam ones (4 for $3.29) and they are double ended (yellow for smaller ears and orange for bigger ones)...they even come with a little carrying case...they also have a 31db NRR which i was told should be over 30db for riding...thanks to everyone for their feedback...

I have issues with the ones you twist up and shove in your ears. They start to hurt my ears after about 30 minutes of wearing them. Ended up paying $50 for a pair of custom ones at the spring show and they are so worth it. I wear them while I sleep too cause I do shift work and they don't bother my ears at all. Also, if you tell them your using them for the gun range too they make them at a higher rating, so better noise cancillation.
