Dog experts? Shar Pei?

Anyone got one? Know anything about these? Thinking of adopting a rescue one...says good with cats/dogs/kids for this one, 3y old puppy mill rescue. I have experience with a few different breeds of dogs, just not this one. Any opinions?

If the dog has adapted to being around other dogs/cats/kids as it states, than it probably has a good temperment. (sp)

The only thing is what skeltons might possibly be hiding in the closet. Its hard to tell from a dog coming from a puppy mill. Most turn out well, others have a tendency to be aggressive or develop some other issues.

True enough. This one looks like it's had a really rough start to life being bred like crazy. That's why I'm looking at it, got a soft spot for the hard cases.

Three years old is considered an adult, so breaking bad habits will not be easy, lots of patience and love are required to just cope with the change of the environment for both you and the dog. BUT depending on your dedication you might be able to just turn it around. You might get good help from training school if you are having training issues. I took a class in MCCANN in burlington and it was well worth it. Call them up and ask for their recommendations. Good luck if you end up getting it.

No personal knowledge but some TV news programs have interviewed people that ended up with huge vet bills. Unfortunately they had fallen in love with their over bred mutts. Some vet bills ran many many thousands and puppy love cost them their life savings, RRSPs etc. The odds are a crap shoot because the predictability of the dog is not necessarily reflective of breed statistics. Your wallet may not be as big as your heart.

Google Shar pei genetic problems to see the normal conditions. If the animal has been inbred the problems can compound. One of the problems with puppy mills.

Thanks for the link. I'm the other end of the lake though up near Ottawa right now. But yes, will definitely socialise and train the new additions. We're adopting two dogs eventually, picking one up this weekend hopefully.

We fostered a sharpei. It was very smart and easy to train. Virtually no prey drive or aggression and easy to keep. I think you have to watch for skin disorders and keeping the wrinkles clean but otherwise no grooming needed. Good luck :)

I did read they can have health problems, just wondering what owners think. To be honest I'm not hung up on purebreed or cross or any particular type of dog, the one we're picking up Saturday is a cross, just this one called to me somehow. Such a sad case. If anyone is interested this is the one http://www.merlinshope.com/2010/index.php?categoryid=13 Arielle at the top.

I prefer stew

i have one they have high anxiety, very strong and territorial....He is my 2nd Shar pei rescue...

Ahh well...it's not going to happen from this rescue anyway. They're a bit snippety about people who have not had the breed before adopting etc. I didn't want to ask the obvious question of how that worked out with their first Shar Pei but anyhoo.....

On to the next deserving case.
