Anyone try to head to Sportbiketrackgear through Sarnia without declaring gear they bought? I was thinking of making a bike trip over the border with a buddy and might swing by STG.

If you squid it down and wear it back I don't see a problem.

Yeah was considering that. Though my friend wants to buy a helm so I'm not sure what excuse it would be carry a second helm. I plan to squid down and pick up a textile jacket.

"going to pick up/drop off a friend there"

actually they don't care when I ride

Call ahead and make sure they have your size in store. It is a store, but it's more like a warehouse. Happy shopping!

So you are going to spend $60 in gas to save $30 on a jacket and best off all come on here and ask how to commit a felony.
All to avoid paying 13% in taxes.
This will be good.
Show me da money I mean movie, pass the popcorn please.

I always declare and be honest. Just over for a couple of hours, have the receipt handy. I got asked to park it once about a year ago after countless crossing before and after. The person at the counter rode themselves. He just asked if it was for me or someone else. They smiled and said it looked like his colleague made a mistake and just charged me the GST I think.

I think getting caught in a lie is far worse then having to potentially pay some duty or tax on some really great discounted purchase. That's just me. I live in London and Sarnia/Port Huron is just a hop.

I have crossed at others places and done the same thing. Just a day trip or a couple of hours, grab a bite to eat, buy some back to school gear for my kids or what ever. Never really have an issue. I just don't chance the duty free with cigs or booze. Seems to work for me ok.

Aren't you violating sort part of your payroll agreement by providing a way to evade paying taxes at the border?
He sound like the type that will rat you out once they have him in that little room.
uhm, well see officer Jamie told me how to evade you. It was his idea and he asked me to buy this for him too.

Never mind the fact that if he comes across the right guard they'll seize his bike and charge him as well :lmao: all to save a couple dollas

For the record everyone is recorded at time of crossing both ways. Ive come across guards with waaaaaaaaaay too much time over my years of crossing and my above scenario is not far fetched.
These guys do this for a living and the stories they've told me are unbelievable to say the least.

Thanks for the calling ahead tip. Good point.

And golly better lock me up then. I feel like such a rebel - really! Also, maybe some of you should learn to read carefully :)

[h=2]False declarations and the seizure of goods[/h] If you do not declare, or falsely declare, goods, the CBSA can seize them. This means that you may lose the goods permanently or that you may have to pay a penalty to get them back. Depending on the type of goods and the circumstances involved, the CBSA may impose a penalty that ranges from 25% to 80% of the value of the seized goods.
The Customs Act provides border services officers with the authority to seize vehicles that were used to import goods unlawfully. When this happens, the CBSA imposes a penalty that you must pay before the vehicle is returned to you.

If you do not declare tobacco products and alcoholic beverages at the time they were imported, the CBSA will seize them permanently.
The CBSA keeps a record of infractions. If you have an infraction record, you may have to undergo a more detailed examination on future trips. You may also become ineligible for the NEXUS and CANPASS programs.
If your goods were seized and you wish to dispute the action, you can appeal by writing a letter to the CBSA within 90 days of the date of the seizure. You can find more information about the appeal process on your seizure receipt form.

Thanks for the info! Will keep in mind :)

If anyone else has stories specifically about crossing the border on a bike with merchandise please share.

In the meantime, I'm going to browse the board where everyone's trying to save a dolla by circumventing traffic violations :)

I cross the border many times per year, in cars/boats/bikes/planes.
I really like being able to cross with no issues.
When I buy something like a jacket or helmet or bottle of rum, regardless of how long I've been over I say, yes I spent xxx dollars if that is what i spent. I have been asked to pay the HST, and I have been waved through, even when under my time limit for exemption. It really depends on the guy at the booth and his interpretation of the day.

I like my freedom to travel unimpaired, get your passport scan on the special list and spend the next decade answering lots of questions.

+1. It's not worth it. If you get caught, you'll never be able to enjoy perks like Nexus Pass and it's on your record forever. Claim everything, down to the pennies, and have receipts handy.

This.
Don't complain when they are no local Mom and Pop motorcycle shops left in Onatrio to service you and your bike......cross border shopping forces these people out of business. If you ask nice, I know of at least 3 shops that often will match, or darn clsoe to match, American prices.

+1 I always declare, it is just not worth the hassle, like it was said before, you just have to come across a guard in a bad mood and your cross border shopping will come to a screetching halt
