Hold on though....if there’s a genuine safety issue then there’s a genuine grievance here. Nobody is claiming the kids are at risk but adults in contact with potential carriers very much are. Gatherings inside have been severely curtailed as they are the most at-risk environments for transmission. Gatherings inside where you have constant contact over prolonged periods increase that risk. That’s defining the school workspace right there.

Personally I think it’s inevitable that schools will close down at some point and parents need to make serious plans for when, not if, that happens.
I have no problem with filing the grievance but I think the scope should be limited. Nobody in any job is 100% safe from covid. Allowing high-risk teachers to avoid in-class interactions is reasonable (they could be distance ed teachers). Saying that we need to hire thousands of new teachers and space for them is a financial game that is only very loosely based in reality.

I think there’s 8 companies offering insurance as of a few days ago. Some countries are now asking for negative test results from 5 days before the flight rather than 24 or 48h.

I don’t think I’m considering flying until April 2021 right now but we will see. If things look better in December I may be tempted.

booked my flights today, end of Oct departure, good pricing

gonna roll the dice and stay as safe as I can
purchase some good insurance
I figure if you get sick they're just gonna jet your azz back to Canada for treatment

one connection that does not involve setting foot in the US is reassuring

That small percentage is crucial though.....we have a rider in our work conditions right now. No need to go into any buildings if we decide it is unsafe no questions asked. I just went in to my office to pick up my gear for working from home for the next year, had to fill in several self assessments and a waiver. All offices were empty. Everyone working from home. Undergrads are grumbling a lot understandably but they get it.

I still don’t fully understand why schools weren’t prepared for distance ed fully over the summer. We’ve known for ages.

One teacher testing positive will start a cascade. In articles I posted recently you have aircraft transmission. Those flights were 2-3 h max I think. I can’t honestly see how schools won’t start getting cases as this thing is so infectious.

A lot comes down to being smart. Whether you are hanging out in your house in Ontario or a villa in Costa Rica probably doesn't matter. The flight should be reasonably safe with masks, no food, etc. If you are dumb and go clubbing and get drunk, that doesn't matter whether you are in Ontario or Costa Rico either.

I fully expect them to get cases. Zero cases never was and never will be the goal in Canada. The trick will be does the return to school increase cases so quickly that the only way to keep the caseload under control is reinstate full shutdown.

FWIW, my kids daycare (that had 7 kids and 3 staff) is officially in respiratory outbreak now (runny noses).

Where you off to?

Also just got my enrolment numbers for September...so much for undergrads sitting out a year as a gap year, enrolment is the highest ever.

quarantine has been lifted
death rate/pop is similar to Canada

I know the city of Cuenca very well and have friends there
they have done quite well with Covid controls
lots of Yanks live there but they're all Democrats!

I fear this too. I'm not sure 'danger' is viable reason not to report to work, there are lots of front line workers that stepped up and did the essential work in difficult situations. Do you think the checkout person at Walmart serving a few hundred non-traceable strangers (handling their goods, handling their cash) day after day is at more or less risk than a school teacher?

My workplace and my daughter's university educators barely missed a step when transitioning to a virtual environment last spring. They are ready to continue virtually as the new year starts. Public school teachers went on 8 weeks of hiatus March and April, then ramped to 5 hour work weeks over 8 weeks, then took 10 weeks of summer vacation starting mid June. They had plenty of time to get ready for virtual delivery.

Nobody's happy. A better solution might be to say ****-it for 6 months. Mothball schools, furlough teachers and expedite the curriculum conversion to virtual delivery that can start in semester 2 - Feb.

What is OSSTF's problem or are they just piling on the gravy train? The summary I saw of the high school plan appeared to meet every recommendation and the kids are old enough that they should be able to follow instructions about masks and distance. I think they may be the straw that breaks the whole pile as staying home until it is 100% safe, substantially cutting your work hours while continuing to collect 100% of your salary was a perk not enjoyed by anybody else in the country for more than a few weeks. Pushing for that to be the new standard means it's time to cut the head off the snake and see which teachers want to teach and which are just along for a ride up the golden path.

tourist travel is starting to open up
here's a list of places where Canadians can now go

Funny, I was just thinking about this earlier today. I came to work this morning and was presented with the reality that despite just coming back from vacation, as of my 18'th year of seniority coming up in a few weeks...I have another week of vacation to enjoy. Yay.

Looked at some airbnb options...considered another MC vacation in the province...but then thought just hopping on a jet plane and going somewhere where I can eat and drink myself into oblivion for a 5-7 days has a certain appeal as well.

Its going to be distance learning from then until they come up with a vaccine.

Problem then will be convincing all the crunchy "natural mamas" to vaccinate their feral crotchfruit....because, you know, some ex porn star on the internets said that vaccines cause the autisms.

What about the mandatory 14 day quarantine on return?

Some provinces are closing the door on Conscience exemptions, I'd suspect Ontario is waiting for the laws to be tested elsewhere before doing same.

wouldn't normally say this
as the food sucks and it's kinda boring
but nice beaches and the cerveza is serviceable

Cuba would be a good option
good pandemic control
short, direct flight

and most importantly no FreeDumb!!

Nice, surprising they have done so well, not a put down (Latin countries tend to be a little more relaxed on things), but good to hear. Considering the surrounding countries are not doing well.
Enjoy the trip!

I can't see myself going anywhere until this COVID is more resolved.

Got a recommendation for the Melia Veradero from family who's been there. Upgrade to "the Level" and you get private area access, perks, etc.

Start looking around online....aaaaaaaaannnd...closed until February 1 2021.

I can see this is going to be the next problem - a lot of the bigger and more expensive/exclusive resorts seem to have shut down completely. The ones that are open are the less fancy (Cuban 4 star, Canadian 2 star) and are mentioning that "some areas may be closed" and "not all dining venues may be open".

As for the 14 day quarantine on return, well... I could make that work. ;)
