Cheap New Dual Sports - Which One Would You Buy?

The husky te250 is a great bike road legal light and fast miles better than any of the Japanese bikes. But also hard to find

I have a 2014 KLX250S and I have ridden the snowmobile trails in Muskoka with it many times. The trails are generally swamp-rock-repeat and the weight of the Kawasaki (or Honda or Yamaha WR-R) is definitely a hindrance. The suspension is just OK, but's road legal and dependable as can be. It's also very easily modified if you like to tinker.
I would look for a lightly used WR250F or Husky 250.

I find the suspension quite good for the price point. You're correct in saying the bike is depenable. I've got 5200 hard kms on mine, 85% offroad, and other than oil changes, and cleaning the air filter, it's never let me down.

Are we talking about the same WR? ...... http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/products/details.php?model=4636&group=MC&catId=13 ... I don't think it has much in common with YZ line of mx bikes ... perhaps titanium valve bits ... but the maintenance is nowhere near the requirement of mx bikes. I would definitely call it "fire and go" bike if I was looking for one. The only downside is ... they are not low cost for what they are.

I think you are talking about this ... yes that bike is a direct child of YZ250F with few things different ... like 6-speed tranny.

Two very different bikes.

The WR is actually based on the YZ. Guess that's where Yammy justifies the 2k more in price. Here's a good article on their woods bike, and the WR. WR bit is near the bottom.

^ that article is talking about the WR250F, which is a completely different bike than the WR250R

CBR 500X - good bike, would do everything decently well

You guys keep mixing it up ...

YZ250X - two stroke mx based beast
YZ250F - four stroke mx based bike
WR250F - four stroke mx based beast (correction made)
WR250R - four stroke mild tune bike

See here ...

This is the bike we are talking about .... listed in the dual purpose category, right here ... http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/products/details.php?model=4636&group=MC&catId=13&year=2016

I'd pay to see someone in Ganaraska on this ... LOL ... this is the trap the manufacturers are committing by false advertising ... like VStrom is good for off-road too.

Yep, my bad. Wrong article. Too many F's, X's, and R's......

I know, the manufacturers aren't doing themselves any favors when you need an encyclopedia to decipher their alphabet soup of model names. It probably took me a week or two to understand what I was looking at when I started looking for dual sport / off road bikes.

lol...other than the wheels those bikes are the exact same. The X was just the supermoto version not some 'mx based beast' bs you came up with.

Did you read the article?

The only thing I question is you bought the ultimate hooligan bike, a supermoto. Next you’re going to tell me you ride slow, well below the speed limit and don’t carve through traffic. Sure, if that was the case you be riding a 1978 CB250, but you don’t you ride a hooligan bike which means you like to twist the throttle. The DR in the dirt is big and heavy, not a lot of fun on technical trails. On a dirt road anything is fast, but the Grom, you’re kidding right! Don't waste your money, it's useless in the dirt.

As for going to the Ganny – go and talk to people who ride there every weekend. You will see a wide variety of bikes (mostly KTM’s). Talk to people who know what they are talking about and have the experience. Learn from them. Try some of the ATV trails – just take it very easy. Best place to start is the Porter Road Parking lot.

On the road I never ride slow haha. Where I ride off road, 90% of the time you aren't hitting more then 40 at any part. Just the way the trails are. More slow and technical than Ganaraksa.

The sand is pretty deep in places on the main trails and doubletrack. At least when you dump it, there will probably be zero damage because sand is a lot kinder than other surfaces for that.

Yeah I've been there on my ATV before. All the ATV trails there that I've been on are weak. The dirt bike trails are a lot better, even when on an ATV. Should have no problem.

You want something cheap and easy. Well you already have that with the DRZ.

However, you say EFI and 6 speed tranny is good. Why is efi so good? What happens if your battery dies? Can you bump start it? Why do you want a 6 speed tranny if you're not planning on going that fast?

I would use your DRZ if it was me, but since you really don't seem to want to do that, take a look at the 2006-2008 klx250. Those years it was based on the klx300 so it's the closest to a proper dirt bike. And you can spend about 600$ and put a big bore on it to kick it up to 351cc.

Another interesting argument. I do plan on the occasional trip into town, so being able to do 80+ would be nice.

Hows the reliability of a bike with a big bore kit in it?

The WR250X has the same engine and transmission as the WR250R. It's one cylinder off an R1 in a detuned package from what I recall. Streetbike all the way. Nothing exotic about it. No beast whatsoever.

Thanks Sherlock. Obviously it should have read WR450F hence four stroke mx based beast ... I corrected the original post.

For the money I'd do the CRF250L or a KLX250 ... the other ones are just ancient technology.

If you click on the magic Yamaha link you will learn that they have both ... WR250F nd WR450F ... You are welcome.

don't need to when you know your facts.

you mean WR250F not 450...you're welcome though.

Forget the X version damn it, I was talking 250R vs 250F..... frigging f's, and x's, and o's. ....I need beer.......

Lol again...I know there's a 450F but we're talking 250's son. 450F has no relevance to this convo other than yes, it exists.

Seriously...guess it didn't sell as well so they just got rid of it. I believe its still available in the US and Europe though. It also comes in black too, that's my one gripe with the R...it only comes in blue.
