If you ever find yourself in the USA trying to pay at the pump with a Canadian credit card and it asks you to enter your ZIP code you know how frustrating it can be. Having to go in and prepay for fuel in order to have the pump turned on.

I found out on a recent trip that all canadians have a zip code that can be used at the pump.
here's how to find out your ZIP code.

Take all the numbers out your postal code and add 2 zeros to the end to get your zip code for the gas pump.

Example,
if you postal code is A1C 2B4 your zip code would be 12400
The postal code used needs to be the postal code of the credit card's billing address.

awesome. will try to remember this

I even called MasterCard and had them change my postal code to 90210; this didn't work.

Knowing that would've saved probably a combined couple of hours of not having to go in to pay. Much thanks.

haha this is what i always enter when asked for my "american" address. i feel bad for whoevers actual address is 90210. they've gotten a lot of my junk mail...

to the OP, thats great info. how'd you find this out?

Good tip tho I happen to have a US denominated card ( both Royal and TD have them ) and an easy to remember code.
You can designate a US post box address as the official card address and makes things like Amazon and US purchases in general a hell of a lot easier.
sooo 53800 .....not too bad to recall either.

90210 is suburban Beverly Hills. The school where the show was to have taken place, wasn't actually in 90210 - guess it didn't sound as good for a TV show title.

i just put in the zipcode of where i am, seems to work every time for me...but that is a neat trick i shall try to remember next time...i hate that in the states you have to pay for fuel before pumping...i almost never seem to run into that up here...and for whatever reason, when i do, why do i act like a retarded person and yell at the attendant...it's like the one thing that turns me into an *********...

Thanks for the info!

Never had this issue with my Amex card...

Thanks!! I almost got left at the side of the highway by a sketch taxi driver in Kansas because my CDN credit card didn't go through!

I did,
Just got back from a trip, used AMEX 90% of the time and was asked for ZIP code almost every time.

Thanks for the tip, this info would have been great during my trip south last year.

Yep... Whenever i have to fill out info online that doesn't require my real name i always use.. Heywood Jahbloughme of 1 sonofabitch lane, beverly hills, ca 90210

I've seen that written on the pumps just across the border.

Paying first was common north of Superior and Western Canada too.

Cool tip.
