Canada Post - Huge losses

As expected.. another billion dollar "loan"

Similar to the private lending discussion, if I loan someone 1B dollars, they burn through it in a year, make no payments, have done nothing to change their income or expenses and then want another loan, it is feeding money into the fire. Why would our great economist allow this loan? I thought he was all knowing and benevolent? If giving CP money, he should have called it what it is, a bailout necessitated by the piss-poor performance of his predecessor. Anyone supporting him when he can't even be honest about easy things needs to re-evaluate their position.

I doubt anything will change with carney gunning for a majority - that is 30,000 voters for the Liberals right there. I would sure like to know how the executives are making out come bonus time. If this was a company they would be kicked out the door quickly it would make ones head spin, but this if federal corporations where failure is not only tolerated it is expected
 
Mail itself is pretty much dead but, there still is a market for flyers and “junk” mail as it is. After that, there is stuff that needs to be mailed/ delivered of importance but, still can be done just as other e-commerce transactions are performed. Passports for example, there is a cost to renew, issue, process etc. bake in the cost to either pick up or courier and done.

My former neighbour who was a postman said 90% of deliveries was junk mail and then they had “courier” delivery such as books and stuff folks ordered on line. There is other stuff like credit cards and liquor orders but, even now you don’t even need to sign for most of them.

Ask my neighbours how often they they go to the mail box or super box. Most are once a week or even longer.

This is the equivalent of supporting door delivery of milk because that’s the way it’s always been done. It’s a real head scratcher why we continue to support running it the same way when it’s not necessary.

I dunno if I agree with 90% being junk mail, as I assume he means flyers/neighborhood mail.

Plenty of packets and small parcels to deliver but letter mail is dead dead.

I could live without letter mail, for the times I need to send something I’ll pay $20 as a small package.
 
Agreed. Zero chance of that happening. Just send more $ to the bank account and kick the can down the road.

Firing people is different than actually finding efficiencies, which I’m sure can be done if the willpower is there.
Firing people often uncovers efficiencies. I’ve been part of 3 major reductions in force, when we did them we figured the sky would fall afterwards… it doesn’t. It’s a good opportunity to clear marginal workers, then the remaining workers get down to it, and managers find a way. All three times I was shocked that we barely missed a beat with 1/3rd fewer people.

Probably a little tougher in a union setting as you can’t pick and choose who goes, plus you’re fighting an organization that doesn’t always make employees grateful for their jobs.

In Canada posts situation id start with the newest employees. Cut deep and wide. Then let attrition handle the rest - goes faster as seniority rises.

They could literally cut a layer of management and nobody would notice. Has that classic gov layering hierarchy, with layers on layers.

Decades ago the fax machine appeared and I bought one. It arrived late one afternoon and I had barely plugged it in when a client called advising me he needed a report on his desk the next morning.

That meant cancelling a profitable call to drive to Oakville the next day. WAIT, do you have a fax number? YES. Life went on seamlessly.

Fax has died off except for some some special situations but been replaced by emails that are more versatile.

The "I don't want a change" crowd has to change or pay the real fees.

Covid forced me away from Luddite banking (In person) Now it's click click at home and save the queue time.

The banks don't want to see you either. They prefer direct deposit for incoming and click click for outgoing. Their computers skim their share of the cream off the top.
 
I think it's time for the grim reaper to take a walk thru the halls at Canada Post.

At this point they're asking taxpayers to fund "jobs for life" to the tune of a Billion a year. Jobs for a union that has been a significant contributor to the dire condition CPC finds itself in.

If they only need 30,000 employees, bite the bullet and reduce the workforce tomorrow.

CRA has 60,000 employees 'serving' 40M Canadians ~ 1 CRA employee per 667 Canadians
IRS has 80,000 employees servicing 244M Americans ~ 1 IRS employee per over 4,000 Americans

FWIW in Canada, CDIC protects our bank accounts to $100,000 CDN. In the USA their equivalent protects to $250,000 USD. ($340,000 CDN) and they brag about our system having fewer flaws.
