Cable snapped...what do?

I was washing my bike and it fell vertically (it was still on the rear stand, so it didn't fall over), but the stand broke the cable. I'm an ignoramus when it comes to bikes and cars so I don't know if this is a big deal or not. I'm pretty sure it's not the brake cable (maybe the speedo/odo cable?)

The plastic snapped & the other half is lodged in there. Is this an easy fix?

Thanks in advance, guys

It's not a brake cable since you'd be leaking fluid all over. It looks like its the speedometer cable. They're $15 to replace.

As for getting out the broken end, you may need to squirt some penetrating fluid onto the threads of it and try to snag it with pliers.

Someone more knowledgeable than I will suggest a better method to remove it.

Yeah pliers..or grind a slot in it and use a flat screwdriver..it's just the odo cable, no biggie..apart from the lack of speed reading of course.. :-)

Bad news you broke the front speedo drive hub and it will need changed the speedo cable is probably fine. Try and get the broken piece of the hub out of the cable and order a new hub. Once you hve the new hub it is easy to change but you need to remove the front wheel.

looks like it's just the threaded part of the cable that's snapped off inside the hub. I'd look into a small bolt extractor to thread that piece out, then replace the speedo cable. the hub might be ok, but if it is damaged, it's not hard to replace.

I went to a shop and they're telling me I have to order a whole new meter (50 bucks)

(part 41078 )
Looking at the diagram, I only need 92087, 92022a, and 41060. And that's just ordering on the safe side...I might not even need all of those parts.

Is snow city trying to pull a fast one on me? They're saying 50 bucks for parts and 50 bucks for labour. Wtf?

I never liked where they put that on the ninja 250, very easy to break it if your not carefull . . . sry buddy =/

I dunno..$30 vs $45..and with their suggestion you're completely covered in case the hub is damaged or cracked. I don't think they're pulling a fast one. And it'll take them 30 mins to roll the thing in, disassemble it and put it back together. $50 is normal for that amount of work. They don't do stuff for free generally. If you think you can do it with just your three parts, have a go. It's not a big job either way.

I guess my issue with this is that some shops seem to do this all the time. You order the whole set, they only need a few parts, but they get to keep whatever isn't needed for their parts stock. On one hand, they're parts that I'll probably never need. But on the other hand, I paid for them.

Maybe I'm just skeptical 'cause of prior bad experiences & they're earnestly just trying to play it safe. And if I were to go back and tell them to order the 3 parts vs the whole hub, I'd really just be arguing on principle since it's a 20 dollar difference.

Either way, I'm an idiot 'cause I should've just made sure it was mounted on the stand properly lol

Just order the set and ask to watch them do the work :)

It looks like you could just order the separate parts, but there will be labor involved with pushing the pin out to replace the parts, as there is a pin that holds the meter gear into the housing...And if you look at the prices those parts bought separate are about $40 anyways....When you could just buy the complete housing for $50 and just swap the complete unit....

Looks like a typical situation where we no whats wrong and how can be fixed but we don't have the technical know how ? as well as the proper tools to do it, i believe that in such a situation it is better to go to a technician as he will be having all the knowledge as well as he will be the one answerable if anything goes wrong at all. Rather than taking the risk of doing it on my own which in turn may lead to something even worst in future.
Anyways best of luck ...
