Brake Pad Recommendations

Hey all,

Well I think it's time for some new brake pads on the 250! I'm coming up on 24,000km and I can feel them wearing down, and wiggling a bit when I'm coming to a stop.

Any recommendations outside of the stock ones? As a 250 the brakes are OK I guess but I'd like something in order to stop faster, and have more initial bite (non-ABS model). The stock ones are fine but spongy when I brake hard and you can feel the delay from hitting the brakes to actual bite. The rear ones are fine, but I'd like to replace both together.

Any recommendations are highly appreciated!

Also if anyone in Etobicoke area is doing their brakes soon please let me know and I'd love to see how you do it because I want to learn instead of paying someone to do it. Think it's fairly simple but just to get a better idea of the process outside of youtube.

I like EBC on the street.

Every store sells EBC (EBC HH), which are great brake pads (I ran EBC green stuff on the car too - made in UK!).

(Sorry, just changed mine last fall).

Another pad worth consideration (as something more "sporty" than stock) is the Vesrah RJL.

  • A harder backing plate than OEM brake pads for more even pressure across the pad.
  • More initial "bite" giving the brakes a more aggressive feel.
  • Pad compound is resistant to fade related to heat buildup.
  • No Bedding in of the pad is required before usage.

These are an ideal pad for combined street/track use. They are sintered metal....the pad for your bike is VD-250 RJL. I don't know who locally stocks them, but Kurvey Girl (US) is a good source.

When I was looking for brakes many suggested OEM are actually very high up there in quality. I got a 929 master to improve my braking but after I put OEM pads on my bike I was more than happy with my stock master.

OEM is always my first pick, but EBC HH aren't bad and normally cheaper than OEM

You may find more aggressive braking equates to replacing your rotors sooner as they will wear faster.

I found the ebc hh were much more aggressive than stock, but much more wear on the rotors.

I've used the EBC HH a lot before and like them. Using Ferodo now and getting squeal. Going back to EBC next.

We have Galfer available. There is the 1375 compound which is a more aggresive street, transition into track type of pad than the standard pad but has good wear on the rotors (not sure how aggressive you rip the 250) There is also the 1054 compound which is more of a progressive feel and is their "everyday" type of pad. To get a really good initial bite there is nothing like a race pad however that is way to much for the street.

If you want any pricing feel free to let me know

Ive been doing some research as well on street brake pads for my 600RR.

From my readings ive read a lot of "EBC are good" (with not much more of an explanation or comparison) and a lot of "EBC are bad because they warp and wreck the rotors." Im tempted to stay away from the EBC's now. The best ones ive heard about are the Vesrah RJL hands down, with the other brands (SBS, Galfer etc somewhere in the middle)

Unfortunately from the vendors ive looked at online, EBC seems to be everywhere and the other brands are few and far between.

Has anyone tried anything else aside from EBC and Vesrahs? If so, are they available locally? What about stock honda brake pads? Assuming the price is not way higher than aftermarket pads, would they perform just as well on the street?

We are based in Burlington. I am not sure what your stock brake pads would run but let me know what kind of riding you are doing and I can shoot you some options via pm.

OMFG you have such an amazing selection of brake pads for your bike!

Vesrah RJL, lots of initial bite, tons of stopping power, super easy on rotors, work flawless hot, cold and wet. $120US for a COMPLETE front set (both calipers): http://www.kurveygirl.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=29_42_65&products_id=121

Vesrah SRJL-17, retarded initial bite (talking pinky finger stoppies all day long), monster stopping power, pretty rough on rotors, work good cold and crazy good hot, not so much in the wet. $160 for a complete front set (both calipers): http://www.kurveygirl.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=29_42_65&products_id=122

The retarded inital bite is to much for him I would assume as he is just doing normal street riding. Don't forget the exchange rate, shipping, and customs on those pads.

The SRJL is basically track only AFAIK, and the RJL are a little out of my price range for now. Thats why im curious as to options aside from the Vesrahs or EBCs (because ive heard VERY mixed reviews)

RPMoto, we'll talk via PM
