Bicycle carrier

Hello GTAM members, I have a 2015 VStrom, Adventure model, with the hard side cases and top box. I’m planning a trip west this year and would like to take my bicycle along with me. Does anyone have any info or ideas on how to carry the bike on the motorcycle? I will be solo, so I’m just looking for options. Thanks.

They sell trailer hitches for some bike types and bike specific trailers that lean with or have swiveling mounts. Probably much more expensive than you had in mind though.

Ya I think so, was hoping for some sort of carrier that mount to the motorcycle via passenger foot peg area. But I imagine that no matter what route I go with, it won’t be cheap.

That is pretty much what I’m looking for, and like I mentioned, what’s cheap now a days. Now, does anyone have any real world experience with something like this? I have seen one or two people with bicycles attached to the motorcycle. Just never had a chance to talk with them. And thanks for the links gentleman.

I think the vertical is better than the horizontal. Reduces the lever arm of the effective sail. A friend was considering a similar solution. Afaik, he didn't proceed but I'm not sure what killed the idea for him.

Depending on how bad a mood the officer is in, most of these racks may run afoul of plate and light laws. Lights on the back of the bicycle aren't a terrible idea.

There seem to be a lot of choices, all based on having a 2" receiver. Fabricate that and away you go ?

Those are for cages, none will work on a bike (when you get to the first corner, the bicycle will hit and either break or toss you in the ditch). Bicycle needs to be inline with motorcycle not perpendicular as with a cage.

There are a few listed there with fairly long vertical extensions.
Mount it high enough and you could likely get away with it.
But then you're creating a sail - a small sail but a sail nonetheless.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the responses! So far that 2x2 rack seems pretty cool, until I watched the diy one! Now that was awesome! And gave me a few ideas. At least that one is reviewed and done by an actual person who has actually used one. I know it’s not very common, so not a lot of actual real world user comments, but I appreciate all the ideas and suggestions. Keep em coming, I don’t plan to leave until June, maybe July. So I’ve got some time to figure things out and run a few models by some people who are fabricators and see what they say.
