BC shooting

I thought these things only happen only in the US or in big cities.

RIP and condolences to the families.

Very sad indeed.

Apparently he killed his family then went to the school :(. Slowly things are coming out that the shooter was a woman then we hear it was a trans woman (a man), but I am curious how they will round this corner of their mental illness.

I am also curious if it had a valid rPAL/PAL and if the firearm used was legal or illegal
Anything used to kill or injure someone is an illegal weapon.

Uncle and other family confirm trans woman. Whatever, nutjob shooter commits mass murder. The government will crack down on legal guns, again and again. And never address the mental illness aspect. Be it mass murder by knife, car, truck, machete etc.. like everywhere in our world including here, it`s mental illness, including religious extremists. What inane plan will Carney and Gary the chipmunk present over this horrible tragedy. Hint...pssst, it won`t be about mental illness and dealing with it. That would take serious hard work and commitment.
and I repeat again. 80% of gun deaths in Canada are suicides. I'm guessing the other 20% are 50/50 hate or drug related.

Ban ALL guns and the 80% jump off bridges, in front of trains, OD etc.

As a kid I came close to being shot due to a careless storage issue. He missed.

The closest gunshot murder I can relate to is two degrees of separation, The cousin of a co worker, a murder cover-up by the OPP.

Suicides:

A kid my wife and I babysat drowned himself

The brother of a neighbour I've baked bread for jumped off a bridge

A cousin's boyfriend hung himself because of a break-up.

A client employee, always over-worked, hung himself from an office sprinkler after working the weekend to complete a job.

My daughter lost three friends to suicide in a month, none by firearms.

One of her schoolmates, living a few blocks from us did himself in.

Two happy go lucky electricians I worked with committed suicide.

What have gun bans got to do with saving lives?

P.S. Sometimes a distressed person suddenly becomes happy and at peace. In some cases they have planned their demise and are happy because they know their torment will soon be over.

Like Detective Joe Kenda said.. the other 20% are over money, sex or revenge. What have gun bans got to do with saving lives? Nothing. I`d contact my MP but they never replied after my question last December regarding Carney`s C-8 and C-9 bills. Our government in action. 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕 🖕

RIP.

Horrifying for all the victims and their families that now deal with the fallout of missing children that will not be coming home.

Hug your loved ones extra hard tonight. You don't know how much time you have left with them.

Folks, the incident in BC is a horrible tragedy.

Regardless of your feelings about transgendered individuals, let's keep all discussions civil and remember that there are lots of trans people that do not commit mass shootings and be mindful of keeping these two issues separate.

All trans discussions will be moved to a thread in Politics and will be reviewed later as per forum guidelines.

I lived in Tumbler many years ago for just over 2years. Everyone knows everyone and it’s a great small community. This is just sad to hear about.

It’s where I got to enjoy real adventures riding and snow machining in the mountains. My heart is aching for everyone affected by this.

This story just gets worse , suspect had been in multiple interactions with police for mental health and self harm issues . Firearms removed from the house , then the lawful owner petitioned and got them back . They have not said yet who that owner is but whoever they are they left guns accessible to someone with anger issues and self harm concerns. The suspect he now she left school at fourteen and now at eighteen goes on a shooting spree . Where have they been for four yrs? Mom and brother dead , goes to school and shoots a teacher and a few other kids before offing herself . Was this preventable? Too many questions on this mess.

Shades of many other such situations. There's a good number of conspiracy wonks that say that it's being done on purpose. And frankly, it's hard to argue that they do things like you're describing, which make zero sense in the interest of public safety.

From my earlier post:

P.S. Sometimes a distressed person suddenly becomes happy and at peace. In some cases they have planned their demise and are happy because they know their torment will soon be over.

Maybe they went into mental hiding, playing the "I'm OK" game until they decided to correct what they saw as a plot against them or "Life isn't fair" or revenge.

I went to school with what I'm sure was a chick in a guy's body and gym class must have been hell for him. At change time imagine being a naked chick in a room full of boisterous naked guys. That may have been how he saw things.

Guys tend to not see the difference as clearly. A naked guy in a room full of naked chicks could be taken as a fantasy. For a naked chick in a room full of naked guys it is more likely a terror.

The solution isn't simple. With my high school colleague, letting him change with the girls would create a problem with thirty people instead of it being a problem for just one, him. Special treatment just singles him out.

What triggers stuff? I know someone has been diagnosed as delusional and spent time in a psych ward. They revealed stuff to the MD's that was straight from the loony bin but their spouse gave them permission to release them. However if they don't take their meds, the spouse can make a phone call and put them back in.

The small town feeling, 2500 +/- could be a problem. Gender challenged people can easily hide in Toronto or find like minded company. In a small town everyone knows the town eccentrics and not everyone is kind. Support could be non existent. Like minded companionship is hard to find.

The population of my high school was similar to Tumbler. Theoretically I had over a thousand chicks to hit on at a dance. A gay had few choices and being gay back then was illegal.

Life isn't simple. It's hard if you're different, don't fit the mold.

Condolences to the families and friends.

Definitely complex issues for sure.

For one what a biologically born male really has no clue what it "feels" like to be a girl/woman. And we no longer look at trying to cure or deal with that dysphoria outside of encouraging it. An anorexic feels they are too fat, we certainly don't encourage their feelings of how they feel about their body as it is dangerous to them physically. I really don't understand how this cannot be looked at as a mental issue. A person is biologically a male or female and their mental is saying no to them. So mentally something is off as they are biologically male or female. So it seems simple that this is a mental illness. This ideology is now being encouraged and I can understand why there is an influx in kids turning. I saw a video a year or two ago about a girl coming out and saying she was a guy to a crowd of proud and cheering people. I am not one to body shame or judge by their looks, but we have all grown up and gone through high school and different times and know what the "cool" and more accepted kids look like. She would not fit in that. So she now has a large community that is expressing love and heaping all sorts of praise on her for her public transition. Must feel great in that moment to have all that love and support.

No answers on how to help someone going through this, but it is troubling when people cannot even define what a woman is, and at the same time what a man is. Words and language begin to lose all meaning when anything can be anything. And while many look at the question "what is a woman?" as a gotcha question for cheap virile thrills it still is an important question that is only answered by people on the right without hesitation. Those sitting on the left hum and haw and never give an answer for it leaving women as some unexplainable group of people. All that being said I feel for those who are battling with this and really wish we had support services that looked at dealing with the issues around this rather then encouraging people to go deeper down a rabbit hole that will never lead them to be happy and feel whole.

It's the only mental malady that I know of which we're told must be treated by affirming the disorder (and pretending to live within their fantasy).

Until it doesn't, because someone doesn't treat her that way. My lived experience is that at that point, they lose their #$&@. Your 'cool kid' analogy is a pretty airtight one, this is exactly why my stepdaughter expressed interest in changing her gender identity. It had nothing to do with her identity or her preferences, and everything to do with fitting in with an elevated crowd and gaining soft power over others. And as I pointed out in my earlier post, that would have ended along with school, leaving her with the enormity of her decisions for the rest of her life.

It destroys their argument. Everyone knows it. It's actually pretty ugly to see intelligent people of authority doing their best to avoid answering this question, especially when healthcare depends quite heavily on their sex. This also goes for race, to a degree: hypertension and kidney function differences are two important ones.
All that being said I feel for those who are battling with this and really wish we had support services that looked at dealing with the issues around this rather then encouraging people to go deeper down a rabbit hole that will never lead them to be happy and feel whole.
We're deliberately avoiding anything in the way of declaring transgenderism abnormal, much less an increasingly systemic problem born of projected ideology. Both are definitely of concern. In many cases in the past, someone with gender dysphoria grew out of it and the person resumed life satisfied with their sex, but most often because they had discovered that they were homosexual. Now, they're being pressured into acting on their confusion, by the people that they should be able to depend on for adult advice.

Here's the thing: the honest people in healthcare and mental care know fully well about all of this and privately can be heard decrying the situation. But professionally, because of the way this has played out, they do not - it's a death sentence for their careers, and all it takes is one offended individual to blow them away. There are outliers that have survived despite criticism, but they're rare - and so we get status quo.

Take a village in an African country. The issues they face is poverty and disease. Yes, there are crimes of rape and murder and other senseless acts. However, my point is they don’t seem to encounter the issues as it relates to gender, mental illness, anxiety, climate change or even political leanings etc.

It’s a matter of survival for them.

My question is, are these issues we experience such as mass shootings and other outrageous events manifested from being so progressive in our world view that is comes back to bite us with stuff like this?

Let’s take a couple African villages , for fun pick a village in Tanganyika and Senegal . In these places , the second and third highest rates of infanticide , because abortion is evil , if a mother dies in childbirth they kill the kid because it’s evil and you kill the second born twin because , well, evil spirits . Let’s not even start with what they do to gay people .
( niece is a missionary in Africa )
