Apparently it's 100% legal to have Body Armour

Its classified as AP and banned in US when someone designed a pistol to fire the round. ATF classifies any ammo that can be fired from a pistol as AP.

This is the reason that you cant buy surplus 7.62x39 in US, as there are pistols that shoot it, but can buy same milsurp ammo in 8mm mauser, 7.62x54 etc no problem.

Ahhh, never knew steel core was classed as AP :) Did they use steel core way back in the day? All my corrosive milsurp rounds of 7.62x51 and 7.62x39 were always steel core!! I think the headstamps were always 1978?

The surplus mill stuff comes in nonmagnetic or steel core. Have a mix for my Enfield as well as some modern soft nose rounds.

The .303 steel core should have about the same performance as the 30-06. It gives up a few hundred fps and a few hundred ft/lbs in velocity/energy but it's not too far off the mark. That's if you are comparing both as 150 grain bullets. Lots of different specs on .303 since there have been 7 billion produced over the last ~100 years.

I'd like to test .338 LM AP485 against the higher end ceramics and steel plate just for curiosity sake. It's rated as 13mm penetration on HB 400 steel @ 550 meters so It might just eat AR 500 @ 100 meters.

Anyone want to donate their armour for..... science?

:)

Maybe SnowbikeMike might let you test on him.

Just for what it's worth, my favourite caliber is probably .338 LM. Next would be 30-30

My favourite is the right caliber for the job. Wouldn't use the same caliber for rabbits and deer, for example. As for testing .338LM, D23 you can finally get the plate in the right thickness for a reasonable price. It would end up costing you less than the ammo for testing unless you reload.

I think I'm going to order an AR500 with the bed liner coating (parax or whatever it's called) and a straight forward steel one soon. Test it from 1000M to 100M to see where it folds. If it folds.

Macs. Would really like to get a lever gun. Was thinking about a 30-30 but I already have a .454/45 long colt gun so it would make more sense to get one in that. Trying to limit my calibers.

Rossi makes a nice one but it's pretty $$$ :(

Actually waiting for a NR I bought this week to arrive. Will bump the ride/shoot thread when it gets here :).

PM me when you do the test if it's possible for me to look in.. Sounds like a blast
