Hey guys,

So the new season is starting soon and I have a few repairs that need to be done on my 06' Ninja 636 and was wondering if anyone is mechanically inclined and maybe able to help do these with me...?

It would save me the cost of going into a shop and having them charge me an arm and leg for labour and sitting on the bike when its done racking up some money from me.

What I need to do on my motorcycle is:

1) Have my chain replaced
(Also have a front and rear sprocket that will be installed at the same time.. I heard its good to do all 3 at once)

2) Rear pads
(Planning to also change the fronts just because)

3) Steering head bearings replaced (Top and Bottom)
- Its a little chattery at times and I feel a minor wobble in the clips when less grip is used.

If anyone can or knows anyone whom can help with this I would be greatly appreciative of this and obviously I will pay for the help done.

Send me a PM and let me know guys..

Hope to hear from some of you and get some help!

I don't live in Toronto, but I'm pretty sure that:
Kneedragger88
Racer5/Fawaz
frekeyguy

Seem to be the top 3 most reputable on here. I'm sure there are others more people can add.

*** UPDATE***

Hi again everyone,

I emailed the shop that was nearby my place of residence but I suppose maybe they have now re-located as I tried calling them last week but the number was no longer in service...

The shop that I speak of is called "Z1 Cycletech" if anyone is familiar with them.. they did great work for me when I needed them and were the closest to me at the time but as I stated I believe they have now relocated to the Queensway and Kipling area now based on the new address in there signature response about my quote..

I am attaching the information in which they had given me with regard to the work needed on my bike below:

Hello Brian,

Thank you for the inquiry. The breakdown of the service you have requested is as follows:

Install new chain, front and rear sprockets - 1.0 hr

Install new steering head bearings - 2.5 hrs

Install new pads front and rear, would also include servicing the calipers (clean, re-lube pistons, etc) Caliper servicing is generally required when pads are replaced. Some people skip cleaning and re-lubing, but it does adversely effect pad wear and braking operation. - 0.75 - 1.0 hr

Our labour rate is $95/hr. The total cost of service after taxes would be $483.08, based on an hour to service the calipers. If it takes less time, or more time to service the calipers, the price would reflect this change.
I hope that this information is helpful, and if you have any questions, or to book an appointment, please feel free to contact me at your convenience.

Regards,

Glenn

What I would like is to find someone whom I can learn and do this work with them and also pay less to have it done in the same regard.. Almost like shadowing but I am paying you to teach me and also do the work with you of course..

Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.

Z1 does good work for certain.
FYI My labour rate for the three things would be $300 plus tax and pick-up and del in GTA is no charge.

Honestly, if you are the least bit mechanically inclined you should be able to do your own brakes and chain with a manual. Otherwise for someone to come and TEACH you how to do it, it would take much longer and prolly cost even more since they have to do the work and teach you.

Actually f it, how good are you at cleaning and sorting? My car has parts from a motorcycle, another car, ski gear and mountain bike gear. FILTHY. Are you willing to put 10 hours with a toothbrush to get my carpets clean and stuff sorted?

kneedragger88 price is more than reasonable

Sounds like a good deal so far compared to that of what I was quoted by Glenn of Z1 --- Its confirmed, they relocated as per. their website.. haha

FYI: SweetOnion referred you as you might have already noticed above in previous responses to my thread.. I will keep you in the loop if I go along with you for the maintenance but also trying to see if anyone is able to show me the ropes also when doing the job so i get a hang of it myself..

Spicoli - Fast times at Ridgemont High - (gotta love it)

I can do the first 2 and teach you a little about what needs to be done.
But kneedragger88's price is pretty reasonable.

Out of all honesty, its not that I am worried about doing the pads myself nor am I worried about the chain but with installing my first chain and not having the proper tools nor the experience of ever doing it before I dont wanna risk botching a job and not doing it properly the first time around...

Main concern is the steering bearings and getting those in without issue and done properly.

Awesome, I can observe/help and learn doing the first two which would only leave out my head bearings and getting them done...

Anyone posting in my thread and able to give help/advice/referrals feel free to also mention what your locations are.. haha!

lol, no worries there. I'm no mechanic, I was just throwing up some names for you. :)

To replace the master link on your chain, you need a specail tool, about $150. To replace head bearings, need front end off the ground. Go with kneedragger and bring coffe and donuts so you can watch and learn.

You sure the steering bearings don't just need to be tightened?

Is the chain a clip or rivet master link?

A little confused about clean, relube pistons. Watching a mechanic work is a great substitute for youtube.

Brought the bike in Aug. or so to Z1 and they went over the bike and said that the headbearing needs replacing... Damned if i know if its loose or not at this current moment.. Just going by what the Tech's informed me when I brought it in to have my chain tightened and cleaned before riding upto Wasaga haha

Its not about watching... its about learning first hand and also doing the work first hand and properly so that if need be I can also help someone else when needed.. some people are going a little OT but regardless, I appreciate all the responses guys!
