Anybody get out today?

I'm the opposite, I like to enjoy my bike as much as possible.

I can't match your no0bie enthusiasm. My loss your gain. Of course when the nice weather hits I'm out all day one day a week at a minimum.

The roads are in pretty bad the year in the west end, so I'd expect damage. Salt isn't the concern. Lots of mud, gravel and sand, some of it quite layered. It's construction debris, essentially, not the fine stuff that melts out of snow. You wouldn't believe the strings of potholes that riddle the asphalt here. Some would be a challenge for a Jeep.

Yes mud, gravel and sand thats a different story.

I just brought my bike home from Scarborough. A bit chilly on the highway but otherwise fine.

No offense intended, but why even have it if you are afraid to use it much?

When I had a street bike I wouldn't ride it unti the salt was washed away. It would get mistaken for a new bike but it was a 2004 with 30,000km (low km I know) but some of the 3 year old bikes I see look like they we're given to a 4 year old to play with.

WAY TOO MANY potholes!! I drive a R35, even set to comfort mode it's insanely bumpy out there, some of them are crater size, feels like I crashed my car every time hitting potholes. The city needs to hurry the **** up to fix those roads, otherwise they are getting sued for car damage quite soon.

:) - You better not be talking about my bike !!

I went for an hr ride yesterday, it was really nice specially with the heated gear on

Went for another ride around today, had a little mishap with my charging system yesterday which left me stranded for about 10 minutes until I got it running good enough to get home, fixed it up, and got in another half hour today before the sub-zero temperatures come this week again! Charging issues all fixed and bike is running like a champ.... it's much faster than I am! Have to remind myself to slow down constantly....

Appreciate the regular updates. Thinking on your feet, Big cojones, all good. I used to ride a bike I could fix with a well placed rock. Now, sadly, I ride in good weather with a CAA card strapped to my @ss. Ever heard of Trevor Ware, When Were You Young?

haha the looks people give you when you're on a motorcycle in -2c are priceless!

I stayed on mostly straight, dry roads today though. I have not heard of Trevor Ware... I am a newbie but I'm not that young, will be 32 this year! :D

That's the only way to live, do what you want, you only get one go at it...who wants to look back and say "I wish I did that". Not me, that's for sure!

I went through this debate in my head for ages so I have a lot of thoughts around this. I really think this is how the stupidly over priced bikes get their value.

Firstly, a bike/car isnt an investment, its obviously going to depreciate in value, the rate of depreciation will likely be driven by many factors but in the end of the day the primary driver is going to be very specific to the type of bike /car and will be reflected in market prices. Whether or not you have a full dealership service history, indications of winter use etc is all very minor.

A jag f type, since oct has lost about 20,000 in value with out leaving the lot.

I feel the main drivers for the resale value is as follows. Obv there are some elements im missing.

Factor 1) Type of vehicle - year make model upgrades etc
Factor 2) Kms
Factor 3) Service history
Factor 4) condition - salt evidence would be a minor sub component of this. I would likely look for scratches, paint condition/thickness, dents, signs of aggressive driving first etc

A typical ninja 250 aprox is within the 3,500-4,500 range.
Is a little bit of salt on the plastics going to make much a difference? Not really.
Will the new buyer care if you would get it professional detailed? Not really
Service history? Good to have, but not a deal breaker with these bikes.

Without evening looking at your bike, i would never come close to it, only because of the 30,000 kms. Nothing to do with salt.

Just my thoughts. The message I am trying to communicate is if you really want to protect the value of your bike then simply invest in art/equity/bonds whatever. There isnt much you can do to protect the re-sale value of the bike. Its a toy that can put a big smile on your face, nothing more.

yea...and people like me will come in and scoop up the deals.

Its a joke you guys consider 30k to be so much on these modern machines, I've got a 09 250 with 75k km and it still starts up first time every time and pulls like it always has...

wtf exactly do you think happens to a bike after 20k km, given its been serviced and relatively been taken care of??

By all means, take it.

1) With higher kms, I would have to check for things like break pads, spark plugs, ignition coils, clutch, modded parts.
2) Uncertainty regarding how much stress the engine has gone through.

When it comes to the technical side of things, I am not proficient. I rather be more conservative and buy and bike with less kms, as it will be a lot easier for me to sell. Just because you dont consider 30k to be a lot and the market does, that will impact the resale value significantly.

If you read my post you will see service history is a big component, each person can assess what they value more.
