Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

The numbers that count will be crashes per million kilometers for human control vs sleep while driving. The purists will argue that even one system flaw is one too many, even though the human variant can have multiple.
Tesla has proven to game the stats. Switch off AP 0.1 seconds before crash and then report that AP as not engaged at the time of crash. Hell, I wouldnt be surprised if the software is programmed to retroactively log AP off after a crash is detected. Only tesla can access the data so they don't need to worry about independent verification.

Why let a few motorcyclists and pedestrians stand in the way of corporate success?

you have to stay away, it literally warns you if your eyes are not on the road. It has a camera watching you on top of all the cameras watching the road. 1984 is alive and wall in Tesla's, they just look much nicer then the cold hard concrete world where Big Brother is in control.

If you have not tried FSD it is worth scheduling a free demo drive at Tesla. It is pretty amazing. I have lane assist in my Subaru Outback, I thought that was spectacular when I first got the car new in 2020. It would keep me in my lane and follow gentle curves. I remember testing it out on the highway from Stratford to the other side of Waterloo via the expressway way and it handled it the entire way. No Lange changes of course, just middle lane all the way with adaptive cruise control on. FSD is light years ahead, handles more than just gentle curves in the road with ease. Not saying you should trust it completely, but it does an amazing job and it will only get better the more data and learning it does. I would imagine more trouble would be had in heavily congested areas, getting confused, people walking in front, construction, etc. Less damage to be had slow moving of course, but more to tax the computational power.
Haven't we had FSD for years now? Last i checked it hasn't delivered on its promise.

While it is good, it is far from the marketing hype of full-self driving.

Robotaxis finally launched today. Driving on the wrong side of the road, speeding, hitting cyclists, etc as expected. A few dead road users is meaningless in the quest for profit. The mind boggles how they speed. That is the most trivial of issues to solve.

Isn't that the same for cell phones? The handsfree bit is BS. If you can drive with a chocolate bar in your hand you can drive with a phone. It's the mental distraction.

We are collateral damage.

Not quite tho I agree somewhat.
The distraction with the phone comes from trying to dial or text, not talking or listening.
You don't punch numbers in a chocolate bar.

I disagree if the conversation is intense. Too much brain power is going to things not in the vehicle.
100% agree even if it's not intense ... I'll just not see things or be aware of things I'd otherwise be if I'm not talking. The brain is using part of its computing power on the conversation that otherwise would be on the drive/ride.

I worked with a guy named Nels decades ago and he knew how to read traffic. He'd watch a mile down the road and adjust for buses, common bottle necks before he got into a plug like the people that use acceleration lanes poorly. Now we watch the GPS.

How far down the road does Tesla's system look?

I recall seeing a recommendation to be scanning ~ 12 seconds ahead whenever you can at highway speed - and I do that.

Tesla is optical only and cameras are obviously not elevated. That makes is basically useless for traffic much beyond the first row of cars surrounding you. Sure, it tries to track beyond but it is mostly guessing as it only catches glimpses.

Does that mean it lets you drive into the garage with a bunch of carbon fiber bicycles on a roof rack?

That could be expensive.

Older generations of Tesla systems have aimed for the clear space that they saw underneath the trailer of a semi which it thought was an overhead sign board.

Even better. Once it has run over a pedestrian/cyclist, it just continues on and runs over them with the rear wheels as the cameras can't see the person under the car.

Suncor has a few autonomous trucks running at their site,

Couldn’t tell you how many times they need to be straightened out and put back in satellite mode.

They will lock up brakes on a road if they see a pothole they think is a cliff. Or a rock that they think is a wall

Bleeping tesla, bleeping bleep. They have a safety driver and they put the estop on the touchscreen? Wtaf. There should be a big physical button right beside their hand.

One of the added distractions on modern cars is digital switching.

For example, my first car was a 50's Chevy and the complete heating and ventilation system was controlled by three slide levers and one rotary fan speed control. You knew where they were and didn't have to look to adjust temperature, recirculation or high or low vents.

You slid the temperature lever to a position that made you comfortable. Now you set a temperature and it's digital.

One has to look to see what button to push and there are lots. I think my 2014 Hyundai had over 70 little black squares that required taking one's eyes off the road.

The Chevy AM radio had one knob that did on-off and volume. Now half the driver's manual is on how to select six or more input system and what concert hall is to be replicated, the song and the artist.

Digital is, I'm sure cheaper and faster to build.

Test drove a Sportage PHEV top trim. Some of the gizmos are impressive with camera displaying blind spot and eagle eye 360 view when backing up. I know it’s not exclusive to EV.

Cooled seats was also impressive on a day like today.

Overall, nice machine for a Korean marquee.

Best finance rate is 3.99% for 60 months being an existing Kia owner.

Battery range is 55 km. Dealer acknowledged they never have the battery on full charge but can arrange to have one charged if we want to come back.

We have booked with Ford for their PHEV Escape tomorrow. Battery will be charged and ready.

Ford offering 0% financing up to 72 months.

There are others of course but, these are on the hit list for the time being.

If we want to give Honda or Toyota a try, we have to hit the GTA for a trim level we want. Most are top trim in Niagara region.

Trying to show wife that low interest loan on a good vehicle is just as good as zero % on something of less quality. 🤷‍♂️
