American Suzuki files for bankruptcy

Does this mean fire sale on all the Suzuki models?

I read the article and was hoping for the same thing but no. They're just gonna stop selling cars and do what Yamaha, and Kawasaki do, focus on motorcycles, ATVs and Marine stuff. Though...I think Yamaha does a lot more than that.

The powersports division only represents a small percentage of Kawasaki Heavy Industries as a whole.

Yup! When I started at my current job I had a chance to look more into KHI...wow wow wow...they build ships/rocket engines/tunnel boring machines etc...huge industry and very interesting range of products.

Kawasaki Heavy and Light industries have both built snowmobiles - not sure about other motorsports products. They also build cargo ships, oil tankers, helicopter parts and more. Awesome company... and I'll say that their more recent bikes are so much more refined than they used to be...

Suzuki wasn't a second-string bike or ATV builder, until recently. In recent years they have taken Honda's approach: move slowly and carefully, don't take chances. This from the builder that started what we know as the modern sportsbike... they need to innovate or at least match the other companies.

Meh... they haven't brought any decent models to North American markets anyway. Looking at a very similar trending, Mitsubishi will be next - killed Eclipse, no new Lancer coming to NA. Soon they'll have just two crossovers and an electric car left in our markets. Compare it to 30 (THIRTY) different cars/SUVs/vans they're selling in Japan.

Has nothing to do with Suzuki Japan or with the motorcycle division. Just the American company and the cars.

American Suzuki Motor said it has enough cash to operate during the restructuring and intends to honor all car warranties and buyback agreements. It will work with its car dealerships to help them transition into parts-and-service operations. In some cases, the dealerships will be shuttered, it said.

Once it exits bankruptcy protection, American Suzuki Motor said it will focus on selling Suzuki motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and marine outboard engines.

It said that it is exiting the car business because of slow sales, unfavorable foreign exchange rates and high costs due to U.S. regulatory requirements.

It sold 2,023 vehicles in October, which was up 5 percent from the same month last year. Its Grand Vitara sport utility vehicle posted a 64 percent jump in sales last month, although American Suzuki did not say how many of them were sold. In May, the last month it provided a breakdown of its sales, it moved 474 Grand Vitaras, while its biggest seller was its SX4 small crossover, of which 1,101 were sold.

The bankruptcy and reorganization are unrelated to its parent Japan-based Suzuki Motor Corp., which intends to buy the American subsidiary's remaining businesses and automotive service operation.
The reorganized company will retain the American Suzuki Motor name, the company said.

I always thought they should scrap their cars, seemed like a loosing battle.

Yes and no. One example is the Gran Vitara, way better than the Toyota RAV4 and cheaper too (with the recent manufacturer's discounts).

Why would people go and buy the RAV4, an product that is more expensive, and with some inferior features?

EDIT: These are the manufacturer's disocunts that I mentioned, for Ontario: http://www.suzuki.ca/assets/cms/Suzuki_Drive_To_Decide_Ontario.pdf

Kizashi AWD with $4,000 factory discount
Grand Vitara 4WD with $5,000 off

Plus whatever discount the buyer can get from the dealer

I've never thought of Suzuki's vehicles as a player, to be honest. And this coming from a guy who has owned probably a dozen Suzuki bikes over the years.

I saw a kizashi on the road yesterday. First one I've ever seen!! They seem like decent cars .

Because all Toyota's are generally over priced because you're paying for the name and the perceived extra reliability you will get.

Glad I didn't buy that SX4 I was looking at a few months ago. It needed a turbo kit to be peppy enough anyway and that would have made it almost uninsurable (although the dealership would happily install it and continue to honor the warranty).

They have a few nice looking cars but I didn't like that their AWD models were just FWD cars that the back wheels would kick in for if you started to lose traction. I wanted either symmetrical or rear wheel bias. Low end Jeeps use the same idea. I was also a little turned off when I found out some of their models are designed/built (not sure which or both) in conjunction with GM.

The London dealership I was looking at the SX4 at is going to be suffering now. First they were a Saturn dealership, then that went under. Then a Saab dealership, then that went under. Now it's Suzuki which is apparently going under.

The worst car I've driven in the past 15 years was a Toyota Corolla. It was uncomfortable, felt wooden, actually scared me with how little power it had for highway merging, and was noisy. Nasty. It helps to understand that it was a rental car and I'd got out of a Hyundai Sonata the day before and got snowed into Florida for two days, had to take the Corolla........ and that Hyundai was dramatically better.

Keep in mind that this is Suzuki USA... for all we know, the Canadian car division is doing OK, or at least not going bankrupt

FYI, the Suzuki Gran Vitara is built at the CAMI plant in Ingersol right along side the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain
Mechanically they are identical. The platform is a joint venture between Suzuki and The General

Mine was a Toyota Matrix although I was also disappointed with the Corolla. It felt the same as my father's Echo but a little bigger. I also hate their interiors and always swore I would never own a car with these cheap hard plastic interiors they all have now but I did not stick with that promise as the WRX has a pretty crap plastic interior as well.

Good point.
