Am I the only one who wears a protective vest/back protector as extra protection?

That's fine if you live in the US, where you fall off a bike and throw your family into bankruptcy, and everyone has the "better him than me" attitude.

But up here, its the taxpayers that need to deal with the consequences of stupidity, and 6-10 skin graft surgeries, disability, welfare, etc., over years runs up big costs.

I was just about to post that. I'm surprised that more gear isn't mandated by law or at least the insurance companies to prevent excessive medical costs from squids crashing with no gear on. I'd expect (in addition to helmet) at least jacket, gloves, and boots, preferably with pants as well. I have no interest in my premiums going up to pay for someone else's skin graft because they didn't want to sweat. Though there's already the greater problem of insurance fraud but that's a totally different topic.

I can guarantee you that tobacco smoke takes up more tax dollars than motorcycle crashes.

Unless you highside I don't think the vest will ever see the ground. I wear near full gear most of the time, except when I go get gas or to church, which is a few minutes away. Of course, as mentioned earlier, I lowsided 1 minute from my house going fairly fast, slid with the bike a good 20 feet, sparks flying everywhere. Thank goodness, just a few minor abrasions near my knee and forearm (leather jacket and elbow/forearm armor did its job well). Bike is mainly fine too, not a single scratch on the fairings. Helmet never touched the ground either. Actually I was testing my GoPro so I have footage from my bike and from the car following behind me (dash cam).

Can we tackle obesity, smokers, drunk drivers, welfare abusers, insurance fraud..... first before we get into this "my tax $$ pays for skin graph stuff". We're getting too ahead of ourselves here

+1 thank you

Just a tidbit on medical costs: I fractured my skull way back bynot wearing a helmet as a kid on a bicycle. I did some research on how much it would have cost my good folks if I were in the US. The price was close to $400,000 for the operation, hospital care/stay, helicopter transportation, cat scans, mri scans, and other stuff I can't remember lol

I believe JohnnyP636 was quoted something equally absurd when he got a wheelie to the face outside of Canada.

Out of interest, who makes the best kevlar (or similar) jeans? I've read some good stuff about Bull-it (Royal sells them) as they are some alternative to kevlar, but I'm still not sold on them.

Arguably I'm very much ATGATT (currently textile jacket & pants, full gloves, back protector, knee guards, boots, and of course helmet), but it would be nice to lose the textile pants and potentially strap-on knee armour if I'm only doing short hops/going to be mainly off-bike vs riding. I'm also planning on upgrading to full leather jacket (thinking A* celer) but just trying to work out the proper sizing before I drop that much money on a jacket.

Apparently you don't.

do you plan on getting thrown of the bike and landing on a perfect hand stand? Have some gymnastic prowess?

.
Maybe he rides a Ninja? Know what I'm sayin?

Kevlar is the trade name from DuPont. I think Aramid is just as strong. Some manufacturers use this. Dunlop like using this in their tires instead of steel.

There are a lot of positive things said about Draggin Jeans. Two Wheels sells them. You could also order a set through Velocity. Even though the group buy is over they are still a good deal.
