So i have been riding an r1 for the past 3 years, i dont have anything currently but want to try something different and a lil cheaper then what the r1s go for. I use my bike alot for commuting, and heard the 929 is definately more comfortable then my R1 was, but i know the power is a big difference.
Will i be deeply dissapointed with the 929 honda if i bought one? Just looking for some thoughts from people who have had one, or both of the bikes im talking about.

thanks!

did we? I have asked opinions on other bikes, i think it might have beeen the rc51 though. But you could be great and if so I apologize and then you have a great memory!

929 has way more power and ability than most riders own.
I don't think you will be able to ride the 929 to it's fullest potential.
And If you say that you can, I would like to go for a ride with you.
It is a very capable bike.

How capable are you?

929 is a little shy on torque compared to the 03 R1 you're used to. Not a big deal though.

I had a 929 for a couple of years and although it was great at everything it was outstanding at nothing. Typical Honda I guess. the funny thing when I bought it was a flip between the R1 and the 929. I was targeting the RC51 but at the time they couldn't keep it on the shelves so to speak and I couldn't find one anywhere. The 929 served me well though and had plenty of power. Would I do the change in your shoes, probably not.

Its a great handling bike! Im happy with the power, it has usable power, you can keep up with anybody.( street riding). If you want more, sprocket change, or get the 954 (20 more claimed ponies). I have 73000 kms still runs strong!

I know the torque will be the biggest difference for me. I think though im willing to change that though for a lil bit more comfort( if you can even use that for a sportbike). Like i said i commute alot, so I dont get to use the R1 for its full potential anyways, just as im sure i wouldnt on the 929 as well. I did want the 954 but people are still in left field on there prices with that bike so I thought 954 would be the nest best thing.

I owned a 929 for 2 seasons, great machine as stated above. Only 1 problem, for me, no rear spool mounts. The trunk is awesome and I miss the bike very much. 954 similar machine with many improvements but 25% smaller trunk and rear spool mounts. Wouldn't it be cheaper just to get heli-bars for your R1? good luck on your search. Prices are all over the map for the 929 and 954 but should be much less than the R1 and GSXR1000 which were the popular models of that era.

DoozerDave here on GTAM has a 929 for sale. Has risers and more upright seating position hardware added already.

A better commuter is a ZX9.

Don't be put off by the carbs.

She's a big old comfy couch, that can found for dirt cheap, add a givi rack and you've got a long distance tourer as well.

Same if not more power usable power than a 929.

Great bike, nice power and handling for the year. I did a few track days with it and never had an mechanical issue with it.

I owned a 2001 929 for about 5 years, commuted daily with it. It looked pretty nice back in its day, but to be honest, nowadays, it looks quite dated. In terms of power and everything else though, it was decent. The big trunk was awesome for storing my rain jacket and pants. I don't know if it's possible store that much stuff on any comparable bike.

I love my 929.

Perfect bike for me for commuting and long rides. I've got Pilot Road 3's on it, and I still squeeze in a few 1K days here and there throughout the year. Get up to the mountains, get down to the ocean, it gets me where I have to go.

I don't think you'll have any complaints about the bike, and if its not fast enough for you, go to Silverstone this weekend and apply for a job at one of the teams ;)

Loved my 929 :) Wheelie MACHINE!

Woot, DNS problem is fixed! PIC!

The suspension is a disaster. Dual rate fork springs, the soft portion would completely compress with just rider weight making it impossible to get close to the right Sag. I had the forks completely rebuilt with racetech valves and springs, but a Penske on the rear to fix the handling. A steering damper is mandatory.
Newer 600's have no problem keeping up and staying in the draft on long straight aways like at Mosport. My latest Gen CBR600RR was superior......even wheelied similarily.

my 2000 929 has been bullet proof, for over 50.000 kms. i am 3 up 1 down on the sprockets, ohlins race damper. the bike pulls real hard.ive ridden some newer 600s.i didnt think they pulled near as hard as my 929.could be the sprocket change.my 2 cents. see 929s for 3500.mine was 16000 out the door in 2000.ouch.
