    New to riding this year

Welcome. I agree with Rye, manuals are good. The Keith Code book he mentions is good but I think for a bit more advanced rider. I think you will get more from David l. Hough's 2 book series "proficient motorcycling" available from chapters/Indigo, Amaon etc. around $25 each. Full of practical...

    1986 FZ600 "Black Yamba"

Looks very professional. Can't wait to see it in person. Be careful on the roads down here when you move by the way. The roads are potholed like an airstrike on Iraq and there is so much sand and pea gravel it'll take until August to clean up. Could be a challenge to ride around here this season.

    Brazing Aluminum

Well I won't disagree about Tig and Migs but I guess this stuff isI for the home user doing light duties or for folks that don't have access to heavier equipment or can't justify the cost of a pro. I'm going to try it again but my project is not structural or heavy duty so it should work well...

    Brazing Aluminum

Brazing may be a pain in the patoot but in the case of nickel/bronze brazing it still produces a very good weld. So good in fact, many of the custom frame builders prefer it over mig or tig. I remember, back in the days of dinosaurs, our shop teacher stated (and I've heard this echoed by...

    Brazing Aluminum

I have a supply of the Alumiweld rods I bought in the States a few years ago. I found them difficult to use as they require the parts to braze to be at and keep constant temps of 700deg + for the rod to flow. Very hard to do with propane. Difficult even with Mapp gas as aluminum doesn't retain...

    Powder coating

I picked up Gatekeeper's rims yesterday and met Mike and his wife Tammy who does the office stuff. They are really great folks and took the time to show me around and told me how they do the jobs. They are both into automotive sports and while they do a lot of industrial/commercial work their...

    1986 FZ600 "Black Yamba"

It does look good and I can't wait to see it in person. I hear you are moving to the Creek so we'll have lots of opportunity to catch up with you this season. Now for the true Mad Max look you need to paint the frame black too like Gatekeeper's.

    Need easier Clutching

I turned 61 yesterday so I know what you are saying. I have an 85 FZ750 that is so uncomfortable with forward leaning clip-ons that I can barely manage a 2 hour ride. I'm in the process of sorting that now by fabricating new bars that will get me in to a more upright position to take the strain...

Jeez GK I hope the wife doesn't review your forum activity, you dog!

    1986 FZ600 "Black Yamba"

Well everyone of the 6 or 7 old bikes I've owned has had charging issues and it usually comes down to a) corroded connectors b) weak grounds c) weak R/Rs, especially on the Suzukis. Make sure your connectors are all clean and shiney, and add another ground to your R/R directly to the negative...

I'll join the "waiting sucks" movement. Waiting for dry clean roads. I'll even take low positive temps. I can bundle up. :)

    1986 FZ600 "Black Yamba"

Well as far as mirrors, I have tried everything but I'm till not happy. The stockers don't go out far enough and due to the bar end weights which are screwed in, a bar end mirror won't fit. I did make some extensions for the stockers but they look wack so it is back to the drawing board...

Things not to do when buying/selling a bike

Well I have to agree with everything said as I have experienced it all. The worst thing, IMHO, is when you have a verbal agreement with someone, you travel miles away from home only to turn up and find the bike sold. My own experience from years ago. I had been corresponding with a guy up beyond...

    1986 FZ600 "Black Yamba"

Sorry I'm not sure who you were referring to. I am working on Gatekeeper's stuff right now and will be priming his side panels today after doing some plastic repair. He has the tank and front fender yet to bring me so he is not quite ready. I think he is intending on painting with Plastidip...

    1986 FZ600 "Black Yamba"

Looking very good my man and yeah Gatekeeper is getting jealous. I can tell by his writing. Good point on the DYI. Like all paint jobs, it's all in the prep. If your base is smooth and clean, adhesion is not a problem but many folks do a half assed job (usually in a hurry) and it turns to crap...

    1986 FZ600 "Black Yamba"

I know TJ will flip out over this but I've had decent success using rattle can for the base colour then shooting clear 2 part top coat. Considerably cheaper and decent enough to fool everyone but a pro. That could get you through the season and you could save up for new plastics and have TJ...

    1986 FZ600 "Black Yamba"

Small world isn't it, especially in the bike community. TJ does great work if Gatekeeper's GS is any example so you couldn't go wrong if you got him to shoot your paint. Might as well get it done right if you gone this far. We'll have to come and see how she turns out once riding weather shows...

    1986 FZ600 "Black Yamba"

I am Gatekeeper's buddy in Hamilton that he referred to. He used a young painter down in the Falls to do his GS last year. I think the cost for that was cheaper than what you would lay out for paint as carboncat mentions. I'll get GK to send you the details.
