The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

We bought four , for the four shareholders selling out at work in 2022, they would cost $2400 more each today. We did the sapphire sandwich models for them , mine was hesalite, not as pretty. It will be replaced by a James Bond mesh bracelet seamaster when I cash out .

I just can't get past the whiteish ring on the sapphire. I know it only shows when facing directly but I just can't not see it. lol

Went to the second Toronto Timepiece Show today, and it was a bit different to last year. More established brands, fewer tiny microbrands. Some high/lowlights include:

- echo/neutra: small Italian microbrand making beautiful watches with vintage inspiration but still looking modern. The Rivanera tank is absolutely stunning (and wafer thin), and the rest of the lineup was top notch. Best of show for me, and their 1956 bicompax has shot to the top of my shopping list. Shows what can be done with top-notch design, balance everywhere.

- Nivada Grenchen: big disappointment, not impressed at all. Bad bezels, just general mediocre finish.

- Serica: really nicely made, love the vintage bracelets, definitely worth the money. Not quite as distinctive as the echo/neutra, but still classy.

- Oris: just a general let-down, was curious about the 60th Anniversary diver, but it was bland and the vintage tint color was too yellow.

- anOrdain: enamel dials were stunning, I get what the fuss is about.

- Studio Underd0g: better than expected, even if they're kind of a one trick pony. Novelty colours were more understated in person, and the finishing is excellent. Still overpriced, I think.

- Sinn: if you like their ultra-tool watch aesthetic, as I do, they don't disappoint. Some of the most brutalist, sh*t-kicking divers out there.

Other mid-size brands included Nomos, Junghans, Christopher Ward, Doxa, Maurice Lacroix, Formex, Hanhart and Yema. None disappointed, but also didn't surprise, and seemed exactly as expected based on reputation.

It's on again tomorrow, and most sellers are offering some kind of show discount and/or free shipping. Had to exercise all sorts of self-restraint to not walk out with that 1956 chrono...

I had heard good things about their watches. Just goes to show you need to take motive$ into account when reading reviews.

That 56 looks really nice. I can get flash to bang close enough in my head, though. Probably slightly more incrementally useful than a tachymeter. I saw something on echo/neutra. Teddy maybe. They all run in together. Was gushingly positive.

No need to time this one.

Wife's bday, and our 10 year anniversary is coming up in less than a month and she's alluded to wanting a nice 'dainty' women's watch that she can wear on special occassions.

Any recommendations? Hoping to keep it under $500 as I'm about to drop 8k on a trip to Mexico for 2026. I would want it as a new watch, not used (unless in pretty much brand new condition).

She's not a watch person, and the only watch she has is an Apple Watch SE I purchased for her many moons ago.

I've got some cool vintage ladies watches. None in like new condition but definitely dainty. All hand wind and not water resistant.

Years ago I bought my wife a citizen ecodrive. It looked nice and was easy for her as it just worked. I have no idea what she did but she absolutely destroyed the crystal. It's hard to read time on it now. I havent bothered with a new crystal as she prefers a garmin or suunto now.

Over the years I have bought my wife a bunch of watches (Tudor, Omega. GP, usual suspects). She used to wear them but a word of warning... back then she always wanted the Lady's size and she doesn't wear now them because she can no longer read the time without glasses...

IMO the mid/low 30mm is the ideal size in this context, not smaller.

I picked up a cool Turler. About 25mm. Back is uncooperative so I haven't gotten in to the movement yet. They used a bunch of cool stuff so there is hope that it is amazing inside. It's pretty small but much bigger than some other vintage watches.

If she wants yellow gold, I have a seiko quartz you can have really cheap. I have no love for it but it's a decent looking watch. Strap looks nice but has a dent from the buckle. New strap is easy.

My wife isn’t a watch person. I bought her a Fitbit and she hasn’t taken it off. Measures her steps and sleep every day. Got her some funky coloured straps for it too and she's happy.

Just bought my wife an Apple Watch , I hate it but it’s not for me . It’s not a watch , it’s a surveillance tool reporting to the evil empire. It tracks her steps and some dude in Montecito Cali knows she went to a mall .
