900,000 students coming in…

There is. Just count the McLarens, Lambos, and AMGs with L plates on them in the UBC student parking lot (or UofT, or McGill......).
It's been like that here in KW for many years. My late wife (banker) showed me her filing cabinet with 4 drawers. Top drawer was labelled A thru V. Bottom 3 drawers were labelled W X Y Z.

If one comes in on a student visa, they should automatically be rejected as an asylum seeker.

Obviously they’re not running away from anything as they came as a student.

Canada should track and deport IMO. Too many people are abusing the system.

I loved the part where it talked about the possibility of them entering the US illegally...food for thought especially in light of what's going on south of us...

Talking to another friend today who has a rental house and he was telling me how he knows 2 of his tenants are actively forging documents while waiting for Permanent resident status....came as student and now having fake pay stubs made and fake documents to show they are working in their field of study to stay in the country longer, even though they can't find jobs in that field so working at Dairy Queen or other fast food for cash. Even going so far as to pay taxes out of their own pocket on income they haven't legitimately earned, but showing the government they are paying taxes, creating a false economy if it's on as big of a scale as he says it is. Wrong addresses on their drivers licenses and insurance policies... The desperation to be here is real...
Many franchises opened exclusively for selling fake payrolls and PR.

Also told me about guys from his temple who took out big loans to get their CDL, to work for a trucking company for a couple months only to not get paid. I guess some of these trucking companies figure these guys won't go after them as they can just say there is no record of employment for them and good luck collecting a penny, they too don't want to put a stain on their PR applications or while waiting for PR so they keep quiet. This community sure has no problem taking advantage of their own if it means more money in their pocket.

One has to ask, "What would I do if the only alternate was one shown on the video?"

There are factory videos of people working in foundries barefoot and wearing cotton clothing. PPE is a joke. Some of the videos aren't clear due to the hazardous fumes in the place.

Sadly, when we import those types of workers, we import their standards. An elderly couple asked me for a price to enclose the balcony of their condo so they could bring a boy from home to help with housework.

FWIW enclosing a balcony is usually illegal and even if done, there is rarely enough electrical power to condition the space. If the balconies above and below are open one needs a lot of heat in winter.

The thing is that we look at some newcomers and think 'how can they live like that?' ... but something that looks horrible to us, is a massive upgrade to their existing situation in their home country.

No surprise that some will do anything possible to stay just to not go back.

My solution would be to name and shame, and then the govt to go after the businesses / employers that are abusing these people.

I'm not saying let people overstay the visa / permit...I'm just saying get rid of the incentive to the businesses that abuse them and watch the people leave.

Your friend should report those people to the appropriate authorities because frankly, he's part of the problem if he's knowingly letting them do it.

A couple years ago he did report 2 brothers here on fake documents - even under fake names and he didn't get one follow up email or phone call so his faith in the government investigating anything is about zero percent.

Canada is extremely easy on illegal immigration. In Timmins (my summer place) had a 240 Indian Immigrants in 2001. Timmins central has a population of about 30,000.

When Northern College started recruiting students in 2021, the population started to surge, 2000+ students a year enrolled, about 1000 of them new each year. Over a 5 year period somewhere around 8000 individuals into a population of 30,000.

Today it's estimated there are >5,000 Indian students that have made the city home. I know several students who enrolled in college to get to Canada - then took cash jobs, only to attend school often enough to continue enrollment. I would say 90% of the staff at big box stores (WalMart, HomeDepot etc) are Indian nationals that arrived on student visas.

There seems to be zero issues socially and nobody seems to be exploited. The town needs base labor as the mines suck up every available legal worker.

It's been good for the Honda dealer - 5 years ago you rarely saw a Honda in the North - today there are hundreds fart-canning around the city.

Son of a bit$@…they close one door and the open another.

Fak I hope the federal govt doesn’t listen or abide by this idiots idea…

The system has gotten hooked on cheap labour at the expense of Canadians (youth in particular).

Any idiot with a plane ticket will now be an asylum seeker and plan for a work permit….

One of my daughters went to UBC.
The ways in which they catered to foreign students was unbelievable...
That may change. I just read some legit Ontario colleges (like Northern and Boreal) are doing sizeable layoffs as the number of visas is falling hard.

5 years ago those colleges trained locals, churning out trades people, dental, medical, hairdressers etc needed for the local economy. Now they are near 100% foreign students taking diploma mill courses that get work permits at Walmart.

Will be interesting to see how they adjust. I’m guessing their squash courts will get converted back to gymnasiums.

I'm sure UBC is legit as far as their degree programs go... Big in environmental sciences and medicine. But having dealt with the university while my kid was there left me with the impression UBC is as much a real estate developer as it is a university.

That's what happens when education operates as a profit centre first. Presidents are hired based on their connections and ability to raise money first and commitment to education as a tiebreaker.
