We lost one of Canada’s greatest athletes yesterday. His claim to fame was going 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali and then 12 rounds a few years later losing by decision both times, no easy feat. I can believe it,saw him at a restaurant about 25 years ago, he was one thick, solid looking guy.

I wonder how much being able to take so many punches contributed to his dementia later in life. A wonderful career though and seemed like a classy fella even through being hit with so many losses in his family over the years.

His life was full of problems, losing kids to drugs and suicides. Punches to the head wouldn't do much for cognizance. He left his mark on Canada's boxing history. RIP at 89.

His family story was a mess . Himself was an amazing boxer and not an Ali style showman but a class act .

I’m sure George contributed to some of Muhammad Ali’s neurological problems later in life, He was a formidable opponent to Ali.

On a related note, I met Shawn O` Sullivan in `86, about two years before he retired from Pro boxing. And now his daughter tells us that he`s in an assisted living facility in Toronto, he`s been dealing with boxing related dementia for some time. Sad but not surprising.

Boxing is a very unforgiving sport, much like motorcycle racing. I remember seeing Miguel Duhamel walking through the pits late in his career at Mid-Ohio, both his legs were held together with plates and screws, I was in pain just looking at him. Lang Hindle still walks with a limp from his many injuries.

I met him (George) a few times, he used to come into the quick lube that I worked at as a teenager.
Nice guy, sad to hear of his passing.

At least motorcycle racers try , they wear helmets. Boxers just beat each other in the head .

The fix was in on his Olympic fight, I can’t believe the judges had just watched the same fight that I had. You can see the look of shock on his opponents face when he is declared the winner. Being robbed of that gold medal must have weighed on him for the rest of his life.
