Skilled trades college

This is one of the more unusual commercial jobs that I had worked on a few years back. It’s a sex doll brothel in an industrial unit on West Beaver Creek in Markham. The landlord called me up to do the demo after he threw the guy out. That’s Debbie on the left and Mimi on the right.

When I was doing carpentry, a couple guys did a side job at a rub and tug. They appreciated their "tip".

The skillsets of people vary greatly and will be quickly exposed if they chose the right lane, or posses the skills needed for the job. One of the guys I've been using for a helper for 8 or 9 years is completely useless when it comes to technical aptitude. He's 28 or 29, has watched me install hundreds of different hot tub cover lifters on hundreds of different hot tubs. There are about 10 styles and every brand has different skirting etc....I would bet my net worth if I gave him an hour, all the tools and pieces I'd come back to something not pretty/ holes in the wrong places/installed wrong. I can hear the screws stripping any time he tries to remove a gate without me there. Probably can't read a tape measure.
He tells me he is going to welding school in September and I know it's not going to end well (if he even goes at all). No chance he will be calculating angles or not getting frustrated throwing things in the air the first time something doesn't go right. I have told customers many times "I do all of the thinking" haha. Lucky I only need him for his strength.
Same thing with another guy I've used about 2 summers now, similar age, strips the drill bits in no time. Would leave stuff behind if I didn't constantly remind him to check he put all the drill bits back in the case.

Funny I can use the same drill bit set for more than 5 years without issue/losing one.

My younger cousin got lucky with an electrical apprenticeship early on (I still don't know what designation he ever got) but he started changing out light fixtures in Walmarts, then spent many years doing traffic lights on city contracts, helped with some of the CFL stadium build in Hamilton, company he was with grew quickly and he moved up to manager position rather quickly as well, now I'm pretty sure is around $60 an hour and he's either just turned 30 or young 30's. I don't think any of his experience was in residential and I've never heard him doing any side work for residential on the weekends surprisingly.

Don`t leave us hangin`........ which one did you take home? :D

Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing all solid trades. Nice thing about those trades is the opportunity for doing side work. When I transitioned from being on the tools to sales I had time on my hands and a flexible schedule so I started doing side jobs for friends and people that I knew. Nothing big but lots of hot tubs, garages, work shops, panel upgrades, and for awhile in the early 2010's lighting retrofits were popular. If a job needs a permit I can pull one from my buddy who is registered with ESA, but usually I avoid all work that requires one or the customer wants one. For about 4-5 years we were busy as hell and even though I had another electrician working with me (also working on the side) we were turning down work because we were so busy. Cash jobs are a great way to buy your toys - fishing boats, motorcycles and pretty guns that you don't really need :ROFLMAO:.

Now that I am busier with my career I only do work for good friends but even that I do not have the bandwidth, but that is my retirement plan to go back at it on a small scale. I will cherry pick my jobs - no more crawling in insulated attics, or digging trenches.

Plus there is that little part of me that feels like I finally got back at 'the man' for years of insanely high taxes. But if Canada keeps going down the path we are going I can definitely see the underground economy doing nothing but growing. Funny enough, when I look back at my customer base most them were silly servants - cops, firefighters and teachers (anything to save a $$ I guess).

Oh, and one more thing.........do not do work for landlords, bars or restaurants.

Landlords do not understand what a cash job is - cash is cash.....not a cheque, not EMT.....CASH! They like your number and ask you to do the work but when the work is done they want to pay you by cheque or EMT and need a receipt so they can use it as a write off.

Bars and restaurants just do not pay - I only do cash up front with them. Last thing I need is a $1,500 credit at a local dive bar that my wife would not set foot in.

The best customers I had were pre-Justin Trudeau homeowners that were asking me to do load calculations for 12 or 15 x 120VAC 1,000W HID lighting ballasts. One guy offered me $1,000 to show him were the flat rate water heater wires are located in the meter socket . I was like Schultz from Hogan's Heroes.

That will be changed soon enough. Coming soon to a country near you, paying over 10K in cash will be actually illegal.
World will become cashless before that. Blame the younger crowd. They never use it.

It may not be illegal but a lot of companies really don’t like it .
Depositing ten Gs is a royal pain , when I have deposits over ten I take it over two or three days . Car dealers in FLA will not take it , they sell the Ferrari and a month later the Feds take the cash as proceeds from crime . No car or cash .

Useless fact of the day , Sgt. Shultz was actually Jewish .

Structuring gets you in just as much trouble. Those that are smart with cash transactions use the cash on vacation (with minimal pictures) or to pay other trades. Those won't show up in a net worth audit. You don't want to hand someone a pile of cash and they deposit it. That makes you part of the chain of suck.

Bought my fishing boat (2 yr used), all my guns & bows are cash, and my last Triumph I paid cash - 1/2 down in he winter and the balance when i picked it up. Whenever I go to the bank and ask for anything greater than $10k they have to ask you what your intention is and I always smile and say 'Hookers and Blow'

Colonel Klinc was also Jewish

My cash comes in through my boat club , run a huge regatta and now you have twenty Gs to deal with . I just take it in two or three drops to avoid conversation at the bank , it’s legit money , just a pain in the arse .

I learned personally years ago how to deal with large amounts of cash that should be off record , buy groceries, gas , small stuff , you don’t get near a bank .

And apparently Bob Crane ( col Hogan) was a total pervert . Weird casting lol

Crane was murdered June `78 in Scottsdale AZ, still unsolved. Robert Clary(Lebeau) survived the Holocaust and was liberated from Buchenwald April `45. Twelve of his family died at Auschwitz. The last thing Werner Klemperer(Klink)did, of a long career, was playing Klink as Homer`s guardian angel in a `93 Simpsons episode. Sigrid Valdis (Hilda) was Klinks secretary and married Bob Crane, twice widowed she died in `07 and is in the plot beside him. Sad that John Banner( Schultz) died of a burst triple A bleed on his 63rd b.day in `73. Sorry for the thread detour but so many good memories. Now back to the usual chaos..... :)

I read this a long time ago. It still sits on my shelf.
