Honda's losses..

EV sales worldwide are increasing. It's mostly the US situation which is messed up due to politics, and ours by extension.

It's not that simple. Compare the sizes of the countries going EV to USA and Canada.

I know rednecks in the USA whose drive to work would be considered foreign travel in Europe.

Geographically we can't compare North America to Liechtenstein.

Culturally, we can't compare Canada to Europe. We are not as socially committed at all levels. Nanny state-ism has bred too many garbage dump bears here.

Given the rapid roll out of chargers and the insane ranges of the new batteries it IS that simple.
Australia is a worse case than either with size of the US and less than a 8% of the population but EV uptake is skyrocketing.
Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Australia have skyrocketed to record highs, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) recently capturing over (16%) of the entire national new-car market. This unprecedented surge is happening even as overall new car sales decline, largely driven by surging fuel costs and expanded EV model availability
That has also been coupled with a huge increase in home batteries which has now relegated the grid to standby status in much of the country.

If nations stopped subsidizing fossil fuels to the insane extent they do now, China could electrify the planet transportation as they've done with solar panel supply.

WTF talking about "social commitment" ....it's all about dollars and sense now.

I call Bs ev are the same price as gas cars and we save 1000 mo on gas.

Are you saying a gas car and an EV are the same price out the door? Really?

Yes I just bought a new equinox ev Rs3 awd with every option for 52 otd including taxes. Anything gas was as expensive or more and 500 to 1000 a month higher operating cost.

Did you do your homework before buying the equinox?

They pretty much lose half their value just driving it off the lot

I challenge you to find a used one for 25 not out there I hear the stories but the used ones are not cheap anywhere.
I also really don't care as I drive my vehicles until they are worn out and nothing with over 300000 is worth much.
Fuel saving alone means the car is free after 5 years. Even if a new gas vehicle was free it would cost more.

Nobody should consider resale when buying a brand new utilitarian vehicle. You lose so much off the lot regardless the brand or technology. The only car I ever bought new was my 2001 Odyssey, and I sure as hell wasn't planning on upgrading to the latest and greatest van every few years, so the plan was to drive it until it died, which we did.

If resale is a concern, buy used.

I have only bought one used car as I can usually find a new one for less than a used one th closest used I could find was 20k more than I paid new. Normally used are a few hundred of what new can be negotiated for in my experience. The one used I bought was a year old and less than half of new price that was in 2006.

100%

When I buy, I keep my 4 wheeled vehicles an average of 12-15 years. The Taco is 7 years old, not even half-life yet.

If resale is a concern, buy used.

Or find a vehicle with a high residual and lease it.

So get a G63 for with a $300K sticker because residual is ~$130K? That residual exceeds the total purchase price of all vehicles I have ever bought. Winning.

Some people like their toys. And like trading them in often like a F-n Baller.

If I were in the market for a high-end toy, leasing with its fixed costs would be the way to go. That, over having that money tied up in a depreciating asset and playing the crap shoot for FMV when it comes time for resale/trade-in.

I was referring to much older vehicles. But you're right, between the addition of HST on used vehicles, Covid and the supply shortage, the good old days of being able to buy a used car still under factory warranty at a decent discount seem to be gone.

Maybe not a G63, but there's a post on RFD for the Caddy EV where the lease payments can come out to less than the Bolt if all the stars align and you're eligible for all the incentives.

Back in 2023 or 2024 I compared a Toyota Camry base model to a Tesla 3 Long Range. I picked the Long Range to make it equivalent in range although it is actually less. I had to laugh when someone told me the Tesla was luxurious...till I saw the inside of one.

On the manufacturer's sites I priced them out including all extras (Freight & PDI, AC tax, tire tax, GST, etc) and I even allowed the $5000 rebate on the Tesla giving it a clear advantage, one would think. Well the out the door price was $19K in favour of the Camry. On the price advantage alone, at that time driving the average of 20K kms per year, the Camry got me about 8 years of free gas while I still had to charge the Tesla.

Insurance (full coverage): I drive an Acura RDX Elite ($731) and compared it to the Tesla 3 LR ($1529). The RDX is $798 cheaper and I save that every year along with $1900 I save every year on the out the door price in ten years. Hell the insurance on the Tesla 3 LR is $450 more than my Porsche GTS that costs 4 times as much.

Then the resale value of an EV is drastically lower than a gas car.

Need a battery due to damage? Might as well buy a new car.

But as long as you are happy with your EV, that is all that matters.

You have a long way to go because my Honda CR-V that I had for 14 years went to a friend of mine and it is still on the road in excellent shape at 27 years. Of course I personally maintained it (cost me nothing...its a Honda) and I personally Krowned it every year while I had it.

Well we'll see how you are doing with it at 15 years. It is a GM isn't it. Of course you have to keep an Excel expense sheet running on it and most people do not.

Closing in on 100 000 km on my Chevy Bolt. Only reason the hood has ever been up has been to refill the windscreen-wash. Brakes have insignificant visible wear ... I re-greased the slide pins in all four calipers this spring. Still using the original tires, though this summer will be the last season on them.
