I haven't been able to track since covid started and I see track day prices are 260-280 now. Jesus is that normal now. Last time I went on track like Shannonville it was 180.

And $350-$400 for the full-size racetracks like Calabogie and Area 27 out where I live.

There's also the worrying trend of racetracks going private and mandating them members-only like a horsepower country-club, limiting access to outside track day organizers. Big tracks like COTA, Willow Springs and Chuckwalla.

I never knew this was happening at the big tracks.

LOL, I remember when Rider's Choice had Mosport track days for $160 - the big track, not RDT. Back then, RDT was around $100. Sure miss those days.

You get a free lunch though, considering the price of groceries that's not a bad deal.

Try ride42 and reddawn trackdays they may be more cost friendly.

My Brother in law switched to dirt bikes. Cost to get on dirt track is cheaper and equipment is cheaper too. what do you guys think?

Different kind of riding but the skills developed on a dirt track are just as transferable to street as track.

Slower speeds, more focused on 360 degree body positioning to preserve or remove traction. You'll develop a better sense of how to use throttle and brakes to turn a bike.

If a couple of hours of track time will do Shannonville does Tuesday evenings for $70.80 + tax, comes to $80 even. Not every Tuesday but every 3rd or so, next one is May 26. On their site under Two Wheel Tuesday. Normally on the long track.

It's absolutely worth trying, even if you have to rent equipment until you're convinced it's something you want to spend enough time doing to invest in your own. I started on a dirt track and feel like I learned so much more than if I had started on the street. The lower traction limits and speeds really help you explore the limits with confidence, and it all translates to higher speeds on the tarmac.

Depends on what you mean by dirt bikes mx track or trail riding? Mx track has a high chance of injury if you are fast.

If he's just starting out, most MX tracks will have a smaller beginner or learner track that doesn't have those big jumps.

I've also seen some larger tracks with a bailout track beside the jumps so you can run different level groups on the same track.

But yeah, when you get fast and you're clearing doubles on the regular, that's when the consequences get higher...

I gave up track days to go back to dirt. I had more friends getting injured and having other things get in the way so I decided to take a break and go back to dirt (I rode/raced dirtbikes for 20yrs previously). No regrets. I don't race dirt, just mostly competitive singletrack with some MX tracks thrown in here and there for a change. Skills are very transferrable but different. It's worth trying just to see if you like it. Startup costs are pretty low and if you decide it's not for you a resell of good used bike/gear is easy.

I've done Shannonville's own lapping days (full days) and they were good but it was usually the same older/experienced guys showing up which worked well because they didn't split people up into classes and just ran an open track. This doesn't work if you've got vastly different pace/experience/lines on the track at the same time so if these evening lapping sessions aren't divided into classes I'd take a hard pass on that..

Ride 42 offered a limited amount of bundle deal. (think it's gone, but contact them anyways if your interested)

The bundle deals by both have added perts that you don't get from a regular track day.

It's bit of a trip if you live in the Shannonville area but the town of Grandbend being a summer tourist spot on the lake offers some fun as well.
You can have fun at the track and enjoy the surrending area. Pinery Provinical Park is there too, lots of activities to do there.

Old and slow now though.

Nice try.

I've heard that one before... 😈

That's 100% how the old ex-racer guys I ride with are. We'll do a 75km evening ride and they'll show up 2hrs early to get their practice in so they're giving it full beans as soon as the group starts. In the end, they crash, I crash, sometimes we all crash. Good times.

I don't ride with ex-racers, but *everyone* in our riding group has waaay more experience than I do. So I'm *always* the weakest rider.

My Spidey-Sense goes off the hook whenever I hear these phrases said out loud:

"Not feelin' it today. Let's just go for an easy loop this time"
"Hey! I know a shortcut"
"Come on, Gene! This is the hardest section right here." (It never is)

Most of our rides end up at two very familiar destinations: the motorcycle store to buy replacement parts. And also the ER. Not necessarily in that order...
