We Know you Ride, But do you Shoot?

The orientation for Hamilton is about an hour or less, you'll have a 10 min conversation with your host who will tell you the important stuff and then a walk around the grounds where they will tell you how the place "works" . They are VERY safety conscience , as a result its a very safe club. If your doing something thats not proper any and all members will let you know in a very polite manor. I find the members very helpful, offer coaching and help if you are open to improving and its very interesting collection of individuals . I'm there for the skeet shooting , I rarely shoot trap , the sporting clays course is there to remind me I'm not that talented .

Recently I started looking into just getting some BB guns etc...apparently can't fire them in Mississauga, Toronto, Wasaga or anywhere else in your yard that I have access to.

Meaning that if I went that route, I'd still be limited to only the range.

Not sure that's worth the bother. May as well get the PAL/RPAL as I can use the BB guns...only in the same places that I can use real guns.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

While still a contravention of bylaw, You can shoot bb guns inside. Your house is not a good layout for this, maybe the cottage basement provides that option. Otherwise, crown Land is possible. They are quiet so they don't attract much attention.

Didn't consider the basement actually.

Wasaga has the space at the cottage...but a nosy neighbour that's already threatened me for 'day burning' as her friend 'is the fire chief and while she doesn't want to threaten me...she will tell him'.

So it's more of an annoying neighbour up there.

How loud are these things anyway?

Less loud than hammering a nail. Distinctive sound though so a nosy neighbour can hear and call if you are shooting outside. If shooting in the basement, neighbours can't hear it.

When he was a teenager, my wife's brother was visited at gunpoint by the swat team while playing with a bb gun. A neighbour called it in as a man with a gun. Scared the poop out of him.

Well, I did the HGC orientation today and shot a couple of rounds of trap with the new 694... :)
'Shot a 21 and a 20... 'Not too bad for not having shot trap in a looong time and with a brand new gun.
Now I need to figure out a way to carry that fancy gun case on my FJR so I can ride to the club 😁

Just wear it across your back and you get a police escort.

With a 33" take down length it shouldn't take too much imagination to work it out.

Where there's a will there's a way...
I once rode my 1250 Bandit to a range about an hour from home carrying a 45ACP 1911 pistol, a Benelli M4 shotgun and an AR15.
Plus ammo for all. 'Had side cases a top case and a backpack.
When I got to the range there was a large contingent of Niagara Reg. Police present for a training day...
The looks I got while unpacking were akin to how people look at a magician or a clown pulling endless handkerchiefs outta their sleeve.
A few came over to see... "How the hell did you get all that in there"
The one guy was amazed/didn't know an AR breaks in two so easily.... 'Musta been a rookie :)

The failure of the gun buy back program is actually making me want to go out and buy a gun. Does anyone know where to get a PAL in Durham and basically what’s involved? Not interested in anything restricted , just a nice new quality bolt action rifle and maybe some WW2 era military stuff, Lee Enfield etc. I had my FAC in the early 80’s but I’m sure that doesn’t help.

Try this link for the courses near you. I suggest if you do it get your PAL and rPAL at the same time - much easier!

Good luck on the Enfields..........the price of admission went up for these guns. I would be over $1,000 to replace my Long Branch No.4 Mk 1 with matching serial numbers.

https://fseso.org/course-list/#:~:t... April 4, 2026,concurrently in a combo course.

The story on the Long Branch manufacturing is actually pretty cool . Short version , war breaks out and we need to make guns , don’t let the government do it , hire the smartest contractors we can find , in about six months it’s fully tooled and making guns .

Cool :). I crossed the border once on my Bandit (1200) with a handgun and a rifle in the top case. The US border guard checked my Form6, took a good look at the bike and asked "Where the hell is your rifle?". I told him it's a takedown and he asked to see it (I'm sure he would have otherwise just waved me through), so I opened the 36L Givi and showed him my AR-7 (ne had no interest whatsoever in my Sig 1911-22). What he saw is this:

"Where's the rest of it?" was the next question :). I showed him and he made me assemble it right there at the border with half of Canada looking on :)

For those who don't know Henry US Survival Rifle, a.k.a. AR-7 (yes, designed by Eugene Stoner of AR fame), it all packs in the stock. The action, the barrel and three 8 round magazines.

It's easy enough to transport a decent takedown rifle on a motorcycle, but I have also carried firearms that cannot fit in any orifice on any bike. The trick is to keep it in a scabbard/bag/box big enough to cover the entire firearm so you can plausibly say you are carrying curtain rods or broom handles. The catch is that you can't leave it on the bike when taking a pit stop because it's next to impossible to lock to it practically. I have entered truck stops and On Route facilities with a rifle in hand or over my shoulder many times without issues. No part of the firearm was visible and the contours were not obvious either. I've been asked to play that trumpet, but I'm pretty sure it was a tongue-in-cheek request from a fellow firearm owner who recognized what I was carrying :).

This does the job:

Bungee it to the side of the bike and Bob's 'yer uncle :). You can strap it across the passenger seat too, but it makes my scoot too wide for filtering :)

I also have an Inglis High Power (9mm) stamped 'Toronto 1942'

Around here someplace is an H&R 12g single made about 1950 , stamped "made in LongBranch Ontario Canada" , there was a tariff on US guns coming into Canada after the war and we needed to get manufacturing going here , Harrington-Richardson used the old longbranch plant as did many others , I believe Winchester bought the Cooey plant out near Cobourg for the same reasons.
Every farmer and rural property owner had a 12g and a .22 . It was as common as owning a shovel , usually stored unsafely , often loaded lol

I got a chance to work in the old Winchester/Cooey plant for a while (sadly after they had moved out). Interesting place. Walls designed to tip out in an explosion and leave the roof standing, two indoor ranges, multiple bunkers in the back field as regulations only allowed x pounds of powder in a building at any time and fire pumps were iirc something like 400 hp electric motors as fire and powder are a bad combination.

Mark your calendar for the annual National Range Day, June 6th. An excellent opportunity to introduce people to firearm sports. Very well organized, safe and fun event is held at many shooting ranges in Ontario and there is something for everyone, from airsoft and BB guns to archery to various firearms. Practically free too, you just pay a very reasonable fee to cover the ammo.
