Any Trabant love? Came across this picture from when Squeeze and I were backpacking Europe in '88. We hitch hiked into West Berlin and then took a day trip in behind the Iron Curtain. Trabants were powered by 2 stroke motors and the bodies were made of a low grade FRP like product they called Duroplast. They came as either a wagon or sedan and likely had colour choice of grey, beige or putty. #16-Try finding your car it that lot! East Berlin..jpg
 
Those things have shot up in price so much recently because many Polaks want them as a toy.

I would buy one of these if I could find for a decent price and keep in my garage:

Fiat 126P that the vast majority of Polaks had (@oioioi can vouch).

I'd love one to have and re-build but the price has gone astronomical and it's just not worth the effort.

I know a few guys here in the GTA that have the Trabant and they rent them out for weddings, and also attend the local Polish festivals.

This guy did some nice work….but 24k for that car is insanity.

I’ve seen it a handful of times near Breton and at the local festivals. There’s also a green one that looks sweet.

Wasn’t the bodywork something like fancy papier mache on the first Trabants?

Also, how on earth do they pass any safety protocols at all in Canada?

They're so old that they're exempt from Canadian regulations.

I think you can import any vehicle that's over 15 years old.

Importing Older Vehicles into Canada

Learn about importing non-regulated vehicles; includes vehicles not regulated by the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, importing older vehicles, importing utility-terrain vehicles

I looked into importing the Fiat 126 from Poland when I was there last year. But the prices of them has skyrocketed so much in Poland...that unless it's barely running...not worth the effort (to me).

My dad had a fiat 126. It had cruise control. The cruise control was some mechanical rod that you pulled out to fix the accelerator at a certain position. That was the family car for a while for a family of 4. Day trips were a bit like playing sardines.
