Cuba...

Canadian government just changed Cuba to "avoid non-essential travel". I can't remember where the line is, but at a certain level of alert, insurance no longer covers you. Lack of flights probably cut most tourists. This adds disincentive for those resourceful enough to find another way there to enjoy the empty resorts.

The feds don't want to send government rescue flights similar to ones where people wanted to visit family in war zones.

Empty resorts scare me as much as empty restaurants. Just how long has that piece of chicken been sitting in the refrigerator?

Does the refrigerator work or has the service contract gone COD.

Imagine if you will the international outrage and condemnation that there would be if China were to pull the moves that the US is pulling on Cuba on Taiwan.
Before anyone gets their panties in a bunch that is in no way a intended to be a pro China statement just a shot at the hypocrisy of it.

I will be livid if govt sends planes to ‘rescue’ people that chose to go against all recommendations because they get a deal.

Same as the idiots that fly into the region in hurricane season, or go to war zones to visit friends and family.

They should be charged 100% (or more) for any ‘rescue’ flights.

If no flights then ‘govt has abandoned us’….no. You’re just idiots.

2 groups of our friends both had their trips to Cuba cancelled this week. They re-booked for free to Mexico instead as all the airlines are now not flying down there with new visitors...only return flights with those that were already there.

I’ve been twice , once when Fidel was in control and it was a very poor but proud country, then a second time after Fidel when they had started to allow private business to expand and flourish. Things in Havana were looking up . With the Americans crushing things going back won’t be in the next foreseeable future . Sad actually.

Last time we were there we saw a handful of hotels that were built as things were looking toward the end / limitation of the embargo.

Companies came in, built up hotels in anticipation...and then BAM. New admin came in and that was taken away.

So the hotels were sitting empty at maybe 5% capacity.

Black market gasoline is reportedly selling for seven bucks a litre . When you make fifteen dollars a month , you’re not going far.

I feel sorry for the Cubans suffering under Trump's tirades. Hitler demonized the Jews so his executioners didn't feel remorse for killing them off. Putin is doing it to Ukraine.

I don't know when and if at some point the people in the streets will see through Trump's antics and do something.

Martin Niemoller's "First they came for..." speech, comes to mind.

Their vehicle fleet isn't exactly peak efficiency either. I know many of their cars used to start on gas and then switch over to lower quality fuel once warm but without tourists, there is not much reason to start the cars.

My F-I-L worked on wood gasification vehicles in Germany as a POW during WWII. Performance sucked but it saved the good stuff for the Luftwaffe.

I don't know what biomass Cuba has, possibly sugar cane waste but that may be consumed as fuel for the sugar plants. F-I-L said birch burned cleanest.

A lot depends on Trumps erratic decisions. Are they just bad ideas or are they deliberate chaos generators? Create havoc, stampede the buffalo over a cliff, fire up the BBQ and get fat.
