Lock for helmet?

Hey gang,

So I went out and bought a fancy new expensive full face helmet. Normally if I'm doing a quick errand, or a walk around while pitstoping, I just leave the lid on the seat and go about my business... but I'm second guessing that with this new pricey one. I think I need a lock or loop of some sort?

What say you.

If doing a quick errand, why not use the old helmet? I never, ever leave the lid on the seat. Really likely some idiot knocks it off. If I leave the helmet with the bike, it is either hanging so it can't accidentally fall, in a case or rested on the ground. I don't ride helmets expensive enough for people to want to steal them.

Helmet hanging on the throttle with a cable lock through the chin bar and around the handlebars is enough to stop casual theft. Make sure the cable is short enough or through a loop so helmet cant be removed from bars.

Congrats on the nice new lid!

Since my lids are expensive to replace, I typically put it in my top box for short or long stops.

That said, I've kept a helmet guardian on my bikes for the last 15 or so years. Very handy if I'm riding 2up or don't have the top box on me.

Sometimes those errands are part of a longer ride, just stopping to pick up something, or order food etc..

If you want to get fancy, some nylon-coated cable, a couple of cable crimp sleeves to make loops on the ends, and a conventional padlock will give you a custom-length cable lock. I made one long enough to run through the sleeves of my riding jacket so that it can be locked to the bike. The helmet always goes in the top case or gets carried with me, though.

Full face? Chin bar makes those easy. If that doesn't work, build on ash's idea and make a small wire to put through a vent hole. Loop on one end and large thing like a washer on the other.

They are $5 a pair on aliexpress. Hard to justify making them unless you want to go for premium domestic made.

EDIT:
They also have these which may work for helmets that don't accommodate normal locks well. Obviously low security but more than zero.

Costs the same to make 50 as it does to make 1 for me. If it helps people out, I'm down for it.

They would be free. Pick up at any burger night.

That's a pretty cool idea. My current helmets have the ratchet straps instead of the old DD rings and I can get them to still work with the helmet guardian, but that would make them sit a bit lower and be much easier to manage locking up.

It's worth noting that any of these helmet locks that cause your helmet to sit upside down means rain water can get in them depending on where they are situated off the bike.
 
If you ever want your helmet to be missing when you return back to your bike, lock it up using the straps.

Thieves will cut the strap and restrap the helmet.

$1000 Shoei gone because I used the strap lock on the bike.

Ever since then, I run a cable lock through the visor hole. Cables are harder to cut than fabric straps.

I personally like the newer Givi V46 cases and use one of them currently.

Not sure what type/model you are planning on getting, but if you decide to get a Givi mounting plate, I have an older Givi top box which you are welcome to. It actually has keyed alike E22 side cases and the set of them is taking up valuable room in my garage, so I was going to get rid of them this summer. It might be an E460 case like the pic below.

I had no idea that they were rated so slow. Someone told me that the Givi cases I use can withstand well over 200 and not affect handling to any noticeable amount.
