Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Boss is looking at used Polestar 2's .... around $50k for a couple of years old and 400km in the summer.
I like those Polestars. But realistically if I want to do a straight swap with the GTI…30-35k is absolute max.

Beat me to it. I understand a handful of workers being brought in for lead / PM roles that are familiar with THAT particular company / plant.

But 1600….someone doesn’t want to pay union rates to build it…or someone is making bank on allowing this to happen.

That’s obscene. How does one justify a 50k price of a battery for this car that’s what I’m curious about.

Now the guy doesn’t have a car, will get a small ‘market value’ amount to shut him up because his car has 172k on the clock.

Wow…

Read the whole article...
McCarthy told Global News the company is prepared to “resolve this situation by paying fair market value for his vehicle either in cash or towards a new Hyundai, as part of our commitment to our customers.”

Sounds a lot like a dealership that is digging in their heels and is anti-ev. Not sure how the whole incomplete diagnostics mess happened before a 50k estimate.

As for the size of the estimate, Try taking a six year old ICE vehicle with a blown motor to a dealership for a replacement engine. While I don't expect 50k, I do expect a number that is beyond the value of the vehicle. Go to an indy shop that installs used engines/batteries and the entire picture changes. Scrapping it was idiotic and there is more to this story.

It's going to take some time for independent shops to get into the loop.
Once a vehicle is out of warranty, the is no reason to take it to the dealer.
Personally wouldn't trust a dealer to check the wind in my tries.

Interesting

It's very likely temp foreign workers are necessary to get what is ostensibly a Korean-designed battery manufacturing plant up online. Where are you going to find the skilled labour (programmers, techs, lab workers) for making batteries on this scale in Canada?

Importing 1600 out of 2300 seems high. I've gone to South Korea in a similar scenario but Korean workers far outnumbered foreigners in that case. You need some people that have seen the installation before and can direct but there is no way that 70% of the workers are required to have knowledge that is specialized enough that it can't be found here. That is a cost-saving (or potentially time-saving) play. Korean workers have a far different work ethic than Canadian union members.
