I had side-loading hard cases for the longest time. Biggest complaint is that when the bike is on the side-stand, the contents of the left case tends to fall out when opened. Fine if you've got everything in an inner liner, but if you've got a bunch of loose stuff in there, this happens:

Top-loading cases are easier to manage, but side-loading crashes better - the seal on the lid stays intact.

I tipped over the aprilia on hwy 6 in the snow. Latch on side case busted on impact and case flopped open (empty to annoying but not a big deal). Both latches now have a diamond plate reinforcement to prevent that failure.

My wife had a 0 km/h tip-over on her top-loading Touratech Zega Pro cases. The seal dented like wet cardboard. Took it to a shop and they tried banging it every which way, it was never 100% waterproof after that. Annoying, for the price of it. Heard the same complaint from a lot of top-loading alu-box owners.

I had the stock side-loading BMW Vario cases and I crashed those things hard on the trails over and over (and over and over) again. Seal stayed intact because every crash I was just pushing down (in?) on the lid itself. Stayed waterproof all throughout its lifetime. Only thing is, I dented the mounting points so the bags were more or less permanently attached to the bike until I could pry them off at a later date with a long-enough "persuader".

Every luggage has its pros and cons.

The one I am currently using is the SW-Motech Daypack.

I also have its smaller twin. Micro Tank Bag. Both require a bike specific mounting ring.

I am selling the micro version. It is a 3L - 5L capacity.

I somewhat agree with this statement as I prefer hard luggage myself.

Having said that...

Hard luggage make you "look the part" to the general public. As if you are going on a huge adventure, even when only going to the corner store to pick up a carton of milk.

But as @Lightcycle mentioned, in the ADV community, the serious riders know and prefer soft luggage. They may look ugly and cheap but the guys who know.... know that you mean serious business if you are sporting a set of Mosko or Tusk bags. (BTW Mosko bags are not cheap by any means)




My bike originally came with a set of Givi V35 cases in fine condition but they were side loading. I didn't like them and was on a hunt for a set of top loading Givi Outback Trekker. I was lucky and found them for a great price used but brand new.

Not sure about other bikes, but a friend of mine can confirm that the top box will not affect handling at 172 speeds on the Vstrom (and an FZ1).
 
Funny how every one of us always has one of those hooligan friends.
