Zellers to return in 2023

From my limited knowledge of this, it appears to be primarily an online presence with sections of some Hudson Bay stores allocated space for a Zellers section.
News says Canadians are "excited" I'm not 100% sure of that... Are you excited?
 
A discount retailer that went bust being used to help prop up another retailer about to go bust.

Can't say I am all that excited.
 
So they want to be crushed a second time by Walmart.... 🤷‍♂️
 
If only Target would have operated in Canada with the same products and pricing as in the US, then maybe we would have an alternative to Walmart. Right now the "dollar stores" are about the only competition to Walmart. We have a serious lack of choice when it comes to department stores, so I welcome the possible return of Zellers.

If only someone at the top at Target had the forethought to actually considered it may not be a great idea to open stores in the exact location a previous very similar store just went bankrupt in too.
 
Is this just a song and dance from HBC to bolster their lawsuit against the Moniz family to regain control of the Zellers name, for... reasons?
 
I'm only excited if they honor the 5 million points I had on my Club Z card.

I'm dying for a new Proctor Silex toaster.
 
Canadian Tire seems to have filled the void of the Canadian-owned spot to get your destined-for-landfill disposable sweatshop tat. Maybe the clothing section is smaller, but it's mostly the same junk. Dollarama and Giant Tiger, too, if you really want to go all-in.

I have fond nostalgia of Zellers, especially as I was newly moved out and broke in its last heyday of the mid- to late-90s, so it was a regular stop for stocking my bachelor apartment. If sites like Retrontario and Old Ontario are any indication, I'm not alone. Bi-Way is another late-Gen X touchstone. But I'm not sure a new version would add much, even to someone wanting to dodge the horrors of the Wal-Mart hegemony...

Yep. The CD and Sears Christmas catalogs were the best.

I was once told that on the back end of it (registered business entity) BiWay became Dollarama.

The thing that screwed BiWay over is their high return rate.

Not sure how true either of those claims are .

Looks like HBC is looking to make some additional money by partnering up with other stores/brands.

MEC (Mountain equipment Co-op) will also be featured in some locations.

Target has no one other then themselves to blame for their failure in Canada

I will try to dig up the article once read that outlined all the reasons why their failed.

Has nothing to do with the consumers or competition.

Wow, this sounds familiar. To give you an idea of my parents' idea of a nice gift, my mum gave me a soup pot for Christmas after I'd moved out so I could make cheap meals. Gee, thanks mum! (Now, with a 20-year-old about to move out for third year, it seems an eminently reasonable gift!)

All except that one Christmas when I got the GI Joe hovercraft. Not sure why they went off script that year, but I'll never forget opening the wrapping, expecting to see a Bay or reused box, but seeing the GI Joe logo instead...

BiWay was a fave when I first moved away from home. A 24-pack of cotton sox was $4, $6 for same in underwear.

For $10 a month I could wear new every day -- cheaper than doing laundry.
