As some of you may recall, my son is autistic and struggled massively through elementary school. Not academically, purely behavioural.
A few growing pains entering high school, but he hit his stride with the aid of some amazing principals/teachers and EAs.
Just learned he graduated on the honour roll with multiple subject awards. Couldn't be more proud.

Awesome. Congrats for helping him through the struggle and making it to this point. It is hard on families to deal with that struggle daily. What's next for him?
Not too sure. He's feeling a bit overwhelmed at what's next. He's interested in trades which we support and also environmental scientific pursuits. Likely a gap year to go see other cultures and then proceed.

And proud you should be!
Good to hear that the school/ staff helped out. That really makes a huge difference.

It made all the difference.
My dad is a retired math teacher (Harbord) and as a child, I lost count of former students that we would bump into and they would praise my dad's teaching. Super glad my son was lucky enough to get some gems.

It also takes great parents, This I'm sure helped with his success. Congrats to him for digging in.

Congratulations! That’s awesome news! Considering the hurdles all children are going through this year, that is a fantastic achievement!

The home and school environment help, but the tenacity of your son cannot be beat!

I too had a child who was challenged. We fought like hell as his advocate while he was in school. He was a regional math scholar in Gr 12 and collected OFSSA championship medals in 2 sports.

He could not manage post secondary but has managed to make a very good life for himself.

KLR_GUY, the best is yet to come. Congrats to your son, and to you - these success stories are almost always about family.

Autism shouldn’t rule out post secondary education either. One of the better students I have had in one of my 2nd year undergrad courses was an autistic student.
If you can get the focus, it is scary what they can get done. The hard part is getting the routine down to make the kid (young adult?) comfortable so they can unleash the crazy abilities trapped in them.

I'd replace scary with amazing, and crazy with astounding but I get your point. :)
Fair enough. Whatever words work to express beyond the comprehension of normal folk. Everyone is good at something, ime autism focusses the energy of a person so they have trouble outside of their thing but inside of their thing is miraculous. The trick is finding the thing.

Congratulations! My son is on the spectrum as well. Grade nine this past year hasn't gone well for him at all. He needs the in class environment for focus as well as the ever important social aspects.
Between covid and the teacher strikes prior to that he is really struggling due to the amount of lost time.
It is good to hear the success stories though, it renews my energy and my resolve.

100%..

I’m on the spectrum and have another issue starting with a E

Hated University but I found the post secondary degree programs at Colleges suited me much better.

Congratulations to your son, you as parents and the educators along the way for the great achievement!!!!!!!! I am sure it took a lot of work and perseverance from everyone around. You would know better than any one of us here but I am sure this is just the start of his list of achievements going forward.

Not to derail the thread......but
I have always been brought up with the idea that people with either intellectual or physical disabilities are no different than the rest of us. To treat them with the respect they deserve.
This has always stuck with me and in fact I have always had a soft spot in my heart for these individuals.
A lot of people shy away from these individuals because they are "different" but it just takes a little time to get to know them and maybe special attention to accommodate their needs. At the end, they are just as special as the rest of us and just as capable of achieving great milestones in their own lives.
My wife and I have been teaching our own kids (girl-11 and boy-7), the same message since day one. Each time there was an opportunity to explain why someone else was "different" we took the time to educate. Now, my kids have no problems interacting with other kids with a behavioural/intellectual or physical disability as there a couple around our immediate neighborhood or in their school.
In fact, I had this conversation with my daughter just the other day as she has a boy in her virtual class who is on the spectrum. It seems that she has developed a friendship with this boy and they often do talk through their messenger or on the phone. Often, the boy would just call her after class just to talk because he would notice that she wasn't having a good day in class for some reason.

For those interested, there is a great 1 season (for now) series on Netflix called "Love On The Spectrum".
It's great show about adults who are on the spectrum and their journey to a dating life. Look for it, its a great watch over some of the other junk that's on there.

Congratulations again.
