Dang! i actually didn't even read that part in OP's post. I just skipped to reading that he was looking at the F900R. My bad! ;-)

I absolutely agree, for first time street riding the S1KR is a handful!
 
Thank you everyone for your input. Ya, I was under the belief and common sense that the s1000r would be too much. I have read up on the modes and yes it could be put in rain mode to reduce the sensitivity and power. I guess it comes down to common sense. Even being in the mid 30's it still takes a lot of common sense to respect the machine.

I will continue on my research :)
 
Respect the throttle is wishful thinking too, it takes skillful balance, throttle, clutch and brake control to operate a crotch rocket. (y) Start small and you will get there faster, start big and you will be a novice rider for a very long time.

OP - I'd say given your size a Vstrom 650 is a swiss army knife bike that can do very well in the twists, upright seating for good visibility commuting, enough juice to have fun and reasonable insurance.

Lots of late models around ...

Wait, what? At first glance, the BMW S1000XR looks to be part superbike, part supermoto, and part dual-sport. But is it really?

I'm a complete noob, but for what it's worth I'm 6'2 and 210ish at my lightest and I'm currently riding a Svartpilen 401 (somebody mention them earlier) and it fits me just fine and doesn't have any problem moving me around.

No idea what that means qualitatively. Just going to go with the standard first bike statement of don't buy what you aren't willing to fix after a crash/drop. Any BMW is gonna be expensive unless you are cool with riding around on a rashed bike.

Then again, your description of 80km up to the cottage sounds like this is going to be mainly for highways and major roadways? Not sure if naked is gonna be your best bet. Don't get me wrong, nakeds can do highway easily, but there's the entire sport-tourer segment to consider.

And nothing looks dumber than someone on a $16k motorcycle duckwalking at intersections and stalling at lights. Big dude on small bike is what posers worry about. Nobody looks at motorcyclists in Toronto except other riders. Super easy to spot mid life crisis riders and even easier to give them wide berth.

I don't know what the topic-starter ended up doing, but I, being about his age, height and a "few" pounds heavier, went ahead and got myself an F900R as a first bike. Not sure how wise that was - time will tell. But yes, I'm properly scared, as I don't think that a weekend of riding in a parking lot got me ready for the street riding on anything, not mentioning a 105 hps thing between my legs.

At the same time, as a life-long BMW cars enthusiast, I *assume* that BMW bikes are more refined and easier to control compared to some other bikes :rolleyes:, and it makes it a better beginner bike than similarly powered bikes.

But I may be totally wrong, haha. Anyway, can't wait for the warmer weather to finally start riding!

There are many street and track option courses available to improve your skills.
