The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

Moving to the centre of the lane, on a roadway with rolling hills, is a great way to get punted off the road by a driver who can't see you until it's too late.

Then the driver was going to fast for the road conditions.

I've seen lots of such roads posted at 40-50 Kmh. If that's the posted limit and the driver is travelling at such a speed then it's valid for conditions and the cyclist is in the wrong. Moving slow? Keep to the right, as required. Again, see previous posts.

Replace bicycle with tractor. By your logic it's the tractor's fault if someone crests a hill and runs into it.

Everyone and their grandmother knows the posted limits don't apply to all conditions or on every part of an entire road.

Tractors generally travel off to the right anyway, in my experience, unless they are towing a piece of equipment that requires otherwise. They seem to be both more intelligent and less entitled than the sort of Tour de France cyclists I see on those roads. Also, most farm equipment travels on flat roads, since that's where the farms are.

Key word in that sentence: most. I see lots of farm equipment on this road daily. Only an idiot would try pass a cyclist here. A runner, pedestrian, dog walker, slow down to a crawl.

And back to posted limits. The limit here is 50kmh.

Only an idiot would go over that crest at anything more than 5kmh. It goes to one lane 20 feet past it, and if anything is coming the other way just over the crest, you will hit it head on, and you will be at fault (look up your highway traffic act you like to quote on the right of way at narrowing roads).

Every day I pass the same two women out power walking on Conc. #7. They walk two abreast. According to your precious HTA, they should fall into single file. They don't. I don't get bent out of shape. I go all the way over to the opposing lane. If there's someone coming the other way, I slow down and time it so I can do so. Guess what. They wave to me every day. Same with the 3 people I see walking their dogs every day. I go all the way over into the opposing lane, and they wave to me too. It's amazing what dropping the "I'm in a car, I'm the Alpha, and the HTA is on my side" attitude and adopting a bit of common sense/civility gets you in return.

There is no law that says you have to use a bicycle lane. There are a good majority of riders that won't use them. I have stated why previously. I'm not going to repeat it so you can be obtuse about it again.

Actually, now that I think about it, I will. THIS is what passes for a bicycle lane in Aldershot. Ride in that @ 30kmh+ on 23mm tires at 110psi? Yeah, right.

And yet you keep posting in such a way that I must repeatedly point you to HTA 147. Bicycles must turn out to the right, when approached from behind by faster moving vehicles. Where a bicycle lane is provided that is the safest place for them to be, as motor vehicles are barred from being in them. Where a danger exists, such as in the picture that you posted, they may move over to avoid it. It's not difficult.

Weave in and out of the bicycle lane in traffic? That has to be one of the worst pieces of advice I've seen in ages. You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. With the added bonus of an air of (perceived) authority on the subject.

Whatever. As you will.

Parking cars on top of trucks seems to be the new thing.

It happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. on the westbound ramp of Hwy. 407 at Derry Road. Police said the driver was speeding when the vehicle lost control on the ramp and rolled over. The vehicle then hit a hydro pole before hitting a concrete barrier and landing on top of a parked construction vehicle, police said

Thankfully no one was hurt. Wondering how insurance works with this? If he is personally liable for the damage he caused or will his insurance cover the bill, especially because he was speeding.

Assuming there are no criminal charges (DUI or dangerous would be the most likely options), insurance should pick up the bill (which will be high for property damage with two vehicles, power work and barrier damage). If insurance didn't pay every time someone was over the speed limit, I doubt any crash would be covered.

There's no law that states you have to use the bike lane (aka the stone + glass depository). There is a law that says you're entitled to use the road regardless of whether there is one or not. I commute daily in my truck and motorcycle on the same roads. I know why riders move out to the center of the lane, and I don't have a problem with them doing it. Obviously, you don't.
Cyclists do it all the time approaching the crest of hills. It's self preservation and I'm fully down with it. It negates the situation I was in on Conservation Rd. It's a rolling road and I was going up one of the hills. There was a bicycle cresting the hill in the opposite direction, riding at the right edge of the road. Some stupid **** in a Forester (why is it always Subies?) came over the crest of the hill at full clip (80ish) passing the cyclist, half in my lane. To avoid hitting me head on she took the Trolley Problem solution that was best for her and swerved back into her lane, missing the cyclist by inches. That's why cyclists move out into the middle of the lane at the top of hills. To block people from "just going a little bit into the opposing lane" to pass them in a blind situation, and I'm totally on board with it.

I'm seeing the same people posting to complain about 2 wheeled vehicles (bicycles) doing something to keep themselves from getting hurt while they're in their cars, yet complaining about cars not seeing them and cutting them off in intersections in other threads when they're on their 2 wheeled vehicles (motorcycles). Hypocrites. You're not motorcyclists. You're ***** that ride motorcycles. There's a difference. And Michael. You lost 20 seconds of your oh so valuable time in your car. Boo ******* hoo. It happens to me every day driving back and forth to work along the Escarpment. It's not going to literally kill me to wait behind someone in my truck. Maybe you need someone to give you a pat on the head and an 'awwwww, muffin' to console you.
You need to chill. I used to let cyclists get to me, now I just figure there are a few nutbar zealots who like motorcycling, ruin it for the rest.

We share the roads, we share the responsibility for safety. If you want drivers to follow the rules, then set a good example yourself. Cycling has some inherent dangers, cyclists exacerbate the problem with risky operation. Stop at stop signs and red lights. When bike lanes are moving slow, be a little patient and continue in the bike lane. Move right when being overtaken. Don't ride on sidewalks.

Actually there is, Section 148 of the HTA applies to both cyclists and cars. It requires cyclists to turn out to the right to allow faster moving vehicles to overtake them. I could easily negotiate the 1/2meter space between the grate and the lane -- I'd give you a pass on using the road around the grate if your cycling skills would otherwise jeopardize your safety.

Is that a bonus ticket for cyclists. Rider claims that bike is unsafe for proper lane position.

Sarnia. Girl overshot the roof of the truck and ended up on the roof of the house. Apparently she was running from a prior crash when she had this one.

Running from a crash to get into another, worse crash! License should be permanently revoked, or at the very least for a couple years and have to start from G1 again.
