I went down

This past Wednesday afternoon, had some spare time to kill so decided to go for a ride. Made it exactly 6.8km from home when I was rear ended at a stop sign. I landed across the intersection and the bike landed in the ditch about another 20 ft.

I'm heartbroken that my beautiful vfr is totaled but I'm alive and have all my limbs. A touch of rash on my right thigh and sore all over from the impact but otherwise no significant damage and doc is confident I will heal well.

I was lucky, and I know that my gear saved me from worse. Helmet is destroyed but did its job. When my back hit the hood of the car I felt the ce2 back protector spread the energy across my body. My boots are scratched up pretty bad but no ankle or foot injuries. Leather jacket is scratched up from sliding but it held up and I have no damage on my upper body.

We've all heard the virtues of wearing proper gear, now I have the experience to prove it. I have no doubt without it I could have been paralyzed or killed. Any of you reading this that don't wear proper gear or think it can't happen to you, well, I didn't think it would (or rather, hoped it wouldn't) happen to me either. Please, always wear your gear and protect yourself out there. We owe it to the ones that love us.

I didn't get a chance to ask for names but the two fellow riders in the f150 who stopped and helped me until the paramedics arrived, thank you so much...having someone there that understood what I was going through was comforting and I can't express enough how much your efforts meant to me.

Now I'm going to rest and enjoy these treats to help with the pain, but I'll be back soon with a "help me choose my next bike" thread

VFR's seem to attract car bumpers. It's quite a shame. Glad you are mostly ok. I am assuming the knob that hit you was not going to stop at the stop sign?

Glad you're doing alright, and I'm sorry about your beautiful bike. But now you can enjoy scrolling for a replacement. GWS.

GWS.

I still feel the sting of my own ride being taken from me. Communicate with your insurance, be honest about your condition but realize you may not understand the extend of it for some time.

Very well said about ATGATT, prior to my accident I went for a bit of a flight through the air through my own stupidity. I have permanent scars now that are a keen reminder of just how well (or not) the body holds up vs the road.

Anytime I see people on any bike ripping it in shorts and a t shirt I just cringe.

Holy Sh$t

Get well soon, OP.
Sucks that you had to go through this : (

I shudder to think what would happen if the same happened to me.
Its also why I got the brake light pulser module (from TST industries) for my Kawi earlier this year...theres no knowing what people are thinking or doing when 'driving' their vehicles.

Had one on my r3, I considered how annoying some of the options must be for people behind me. But maybe that's enough to prevent that situation, so worth it.

Write down everything that happened now, while you're clear about it.
If the person who hit you was charged, then they may claim that you were somehow responsible.
It happened to a friend of mine, who was rear ended at a red light.

Keep in mind that those annoying flashing brake lights, can get you failed in the M2X test.
When you stop, your rear brake light needs to be solid until the bike starts moving forward again.
It's one point for each instance. If someone sees it flashing, they may assume that you've moved off.

Do some continually flash? I thought they all flashed for a bit (3/5/10 flashes) and then went solid. I don't know what happens with WB lights as he didn't leave them on for a long time. They are effective to get attention though.

Hyper lites can be set up to flash continually as long as the brakes are applied, or flash 5 times and then stay solid.

Sorry to hear about the accident. It's a good idea to journal everything now while you can remember all the details -- including visit times to the doc, and any time off work whether paid or not. Take pics of your injuries and damages to your stuff.

Hopefully this doesn't cancel your season.

GWS.

Thank you - I'll have to remember to disable it when I go for my full license.

Crap
Glad you are ok and ready to heal and ready for another bike

too bad the vfr is gone. They are not common.
oh no not another “help me choose my next bike thread“ ?

Here's the old GTAM link to the copy of the test: Copy of the M Test (M2X) checklist!

The section is in Turns, If Stop, No brake light on, and Stop Intersection, Stopping, No brake light on. (10 tick boxes altogether).

Now, I've only ever driven the chase car, and demonstrated the technique, I have never marked a test, or taken the course to do so, but I've had the guy who does, ask me to monitor the the brake lights at a stop, while he was marking another section. There might be someone here who can speak better to the issue.

If it were me, I'd disable the flasher for the day. Most of the time, you're going to have the chase car directly behind you, unless someone cuts them off to get in.

I know there was someone here, who said they were praised for flashing their brake lights, and had no marks taken off, so I don't know what the marking criteria is, and it can also change over time.

If you can't, then at least let them know. There might be an allowance for it.

The other thing that people should do before the test, is check how far you need to squeeze the hand and foot brake levers for the light to come on.

On some bikes you really have to push the foot lever down for the light to come on, so when someone switches from using their hand to using their foot at a light, the light goes out. This can also change over time, as the brakes wear.

take it easy for a bit. don't do anything that requires any bit of physical stress. ie yard work, recreational activities. long term aches and pain might show up later. gws
