Friendly hint for dog owners......Am sorry for those traumatised by the actions of aggressive dogs.
Dogs at best have the intelligence level of a 4 year old human and those that have dealt with 4 year humans know that these require a lot of "guidance".
It is the "guidance" part, that is more often than not neglected, thereby resulting in "incidents". This more so with breeds hardwired to "protect".
Having said that, I believe that dogs are a person's best friend and some of the incidents are triggered by people, example: people coming to pet dogs without the owner's permission or neglecting the owner's request to stay away.
BTW, if your dog attacks a thief in your own home, the thief can sue you for dog bites, this in the province of Ontario.

Remove any "Beware of Dog" notices on your property.
If there is an "incident", your culpability will be deemed more serious, as the "Beware" sign indicates that you are aware that your pooch can cause an issue and that you were negligent in taking due precaution.

some people think an ex fighting or abused dog can have suffered trauma that can haunt the dog much like a soldier having PTSD. Sounds plausible enough.
My dog definitely has the opposite. Shortly after he was born his mother got mastitis and was unable to feed her puppies. The family that owned both male and female dogs had to step up. Her and her young children took turns bottle feeding all the puppies and it shows. He’s almost 3 now and still wants to lay on his back in your lap and snuggle to sleep.

I always wanted a dog but circumstance always prevented me. Had a chance to own a beautiful (trained hunting dog) a few years back but I lived in a 500sqft apartment with no AC and working long hours. That's no life for a dog. Dog was offered free to me but I just couldn't. Guy gave dog to a girl that lived on a farm north of Toronto. Dog was gone within 2 months. She said it ran away, but we all think she figured out a trained hunting dog will get top dollar up there, so she sold it.
Neighbours had a gorgeous Hungarian Viszla...beautiful dog. Left it in a cage with no AC for 8hrs / day. Got home, hooked up the dog to the bicycle, one ride around the block and he's done. Broke my heart to see that unfortunately.
I'll add that it seems owners with small dogs are idiots more often than those with big, powerful dogs. The small ones 'are just cute and can't hurt anyone'....well the article above just showed us different.

I was doing a job once and the client had many jack Russell's (double digits). She says come through the gate, they're all well trained and wont bother you. Yah right. One latches on to my ankle, the rest behave. It was annoying like a mosquito bite not exactly dangerous but frustrating. She told the dog to stop biting me amd it let go and ran off. Not exactly the level of well-trained I expected and not a level of training that is sufficient if it was big. Given the large number of them, if they decided to attack as a pack, it would be trouble.

Never had any wish for a dog as a parent. When i lived in Milton 35 yrs ago, my neighbor had 2 labs.A black, and a yellow. The yellow was very protective of their 5 year old daughter and wouldn't let the black near her. He was at the bbq, the girl was throwing a stick for the yellow. It took about 5 seconds. The yellow attacked and it took over 100 sutures to put her face back on, sort of. About an hour later there was a gun shot. He put the yellow down himself and sat on the curb waiting for the police.
When I was a kid a a family friend rescued a fighting pitbull. The dog had a very rough life. Dude was in vet school, the dog was kind of a project. It did not take long for the dog to become a well behaved loving dog. I was bout 8-10 years old playing with this ex-"killer", there was never a hint of aggression. The dog never attacked anyone, but it was very protective of the ones it knew. I find their banning in Ontario absurd. There's no bad breeds just bad owners and certain breeds attract a certain kind of owner. With that in mind I fear pocket dog owners more than pitbull owners
There is a guy in Russia that breeds friendly foxes. He looks for the tamest kit in the litter and it goes into a breeding pool with others of similar nature. It's taken decades but apparently the recent batches have pet personalities.
My concern is that if you were an NFL quarterback and needed to make a few more bucks on the side you would do the opposite and look for the most aggressive pups to go into a fighting gene pool.
An ex sister-in-law was a veterinarian and when a large friendly breed was in the news for mauling a kid to death she said there was a theory that since pet dogs evolved from hunting packs they may have inherited reactions to hunting signals, the yips and yaps. A unique sound and situation theoretically could trigger an attack.
Apparently French bulldog pups go for big dollars due to, among other things, breeding issues that are sick. I can see puppy mills turning out dogs that have scratch and dent problems. Inbreeding is common.
Years back I was on a service call and had to go back to the van for a part. I was crouched down at the back sorting when a lady walked by with her German Shepherd. It perceived a possible thread and let out bark that could not be misunderstood.
The beautiful part was that the dog took a defensive stance protecting the owner but did not attack. It was in charge and no crap was going to happen on its watch. A minute later we were relaxed and chuckling over who got the biggest scare.
The bottom line is that dogs have done more good than harm by a massive margin. It is extremely rare that a properly bred and raised dog causes harm. Owners should be envious.

Yep. I'm a dog lover although our lifestyle doesn't mesh with making ownership fair to one, so we have cats instead.
But the anti breed-ban crowd seem to get lost in this argument. Sure your pitbull is well behaved. But the tool in the house nextdoor who doesn't have any idea how to train basic behaviour, or just doesn't give a ****, not so much.
And sure, the neighbour down the street with the 2 yappy Chihuahuas may be FAR more likely to bite.
But the difference is...the pitbill that goes bonkers 1% of the time can kill someone and is going to be virtually impossible to fight off even by a strong person. The Chihuahuas that goes bonkers and bites 10% of the time is going to leave superficial wounds at best, at at worst, can be dropkicked into the next postal code easily enough.
They do. They don't use English, though.

My dog knows minimal English and a couple Harry Potter spells but as the leader of my pack it’s up to me to learn his body language.
