Super warm winter jacket?

My wife's mom needs a really warm winter jacket, because she has health issues that make her feel much colder when the rest of us might just need a thin jacket.

I'm trying not to buy a Canada Goose down filled, but it seems that the warmest jackets are down filled. It seems North Face also makes warm down filled ones too.

Something that goes down past the knees, so she feels wrapped up nice in it.

No down for allergy or ethical reasons?

As much as I dislike the hype, crazy prices and elitism of Canada goose, they work well (especially the proper expedition coats).

I have a few much less stylish down coats that are used when I have to sit outside for a long time. I've still never found a synthetic that worked nearly as well for this application.

For a knee length, artificial fill coat, I would see what Eddie bauer has. It wont be as warm as down and will probably be priced higher than it should be, but they hold up reasonably well.

MEC may also be worth a look for function over form choices.

There is such a thing as ethically sourced down. Patagonia have it in their jackets, so does Fjallraven, Roots and I think Eddie Bauer do too. It’s non-live plucked down from supposedly fairly treated birds. I have a Fjallraven parka I got from a The Last Hunt Sale (outlet store, really very good deals but they are final sale, no returns) that is incredibly warm, same as a Canada Goose. Also those jackets I listed don’t have real fur either. I suspect from past posts you’ve made that your requirements are similar to mine. My wife has a Roots parka from a sale that is also very very warm and reasonably long.

My Mum suffers badly from the cold and I got her a long down filled jacket from the US site LL Bean when it was on sale (it was one of the warmest jackets that came up in a search using that term on google).
 
Go have a look at the SAIL store, they rep a couple CDN brands out of Montreal that are not Canada Goose pricing, still very expensive , but not crazy. Wife got a 3/4 length down coat for $500 ish .

This is actually what did today. Some of the Canadian brands they carry have some really nice jackets.
We ended up buying one that we think will be just right.
 
Once you get past the sticker shock , there are some really good brands at Sail for outerwear. There was a point in life where I just couldn't afford the really good stuff, but once you have experienced warm and dry , you scrape up a few extra bucks.
 
The Gortex/Down jacket, I have from MEC is 12 years old now, although the vecros have gone (Zipper is fine), and I ripped the back out of it once and had it repaired.

It seemed like the arms were too warm for Toronto when I got it, and it's only mid thigh length, although they may make them longer.

As far as ethical, you'd have to check. The tend to trend that way earlier than other shops though.
 
Sizing is super important too. A little too big or too small (older people tend to buy jackets too big) and it reduces the insulating factor.

Thats made in China too. Not that its an issue but liveoutthere just sells Chinese made unbranded stuff now. It’s also 550 fill which is OK but if you want seriously warm there’s 600+ fill coats about.
 
The protesters were outside CanadaGoose stores again yesterday, thier position is 12-14 geese go into a parka and 1 coyote. Big deal , coyotes are all over the place and the geese have a job. Its to make feathers to go into a parka, then foie gra , then maybe a roast.

Modtern technology has progressed to such a point that wearing dead dog around your head is unnecessary in the 21st century so to do so involves a conscious decision, which I personally care not to make. Synthetic fur accomplishes exactly the same thing as the coyote fur of goose jackets. Modern tech still hasn’t got anything as good as down yet though although it’s close and the down is a by product of the food industry. Maybe it’s a European thing but I want absolutely nothing to do with companies that deal in fur.
 
You're telling me the fur on Canada Goose jackets is real? I always thought it was fake lol

It is real and they do tell you about it in the attached tags of the jacket, at least they did on my Canada Goose parka. I did not care much about it or give it much it much thought. Warmest jackets I have ever had have all been down filled.
 
Pay attention to baffle construction

Also don't get to caught up in fill power alone. It's important where weight matters, but a properly filled 650 jacket with good baffles will be warmer than a lightly filled 850 sewn through jacket. Good companies list how many grams of down they have in the garment.

I wont debate the ethics, the fur trade is very misunderstood industry, with a very ugly past. 99% of the Canada Goose style parkas will not be worn in an arctic environment and at that point its fashion so I'll give you that.

This is absolutely true too. Well made jackets don’t allow the down to settle into clumps leaving other areas exposed. I do have an Arc’teryx jacket that’s synthetic fill that is surprisingly warm but I wouldn’t wear it on its own beyond -10 or so but it’s pretty marvellous under any other outer layers.
